Air France Bomb Alert Forces Paris-Bound Jet to Land in Kenya

An Air France flight from Mauritius made an emergency landing in Kenya early Sunday and after a "suspected explosive device" was found on board, officials said.

The Boeing 777, with 459 passengers and 14 crew members, diverted to the coastal city of Mombasa after the suspicious item was found in a lavatory, according to airport and airline officials.

Pictures from the scene showed that at least one emergency evacuation slide was inflated after the landing, with passengers taken away on buses.

Flight AF463, bound for Paris, landed at 00:36 a.m. Sunday local time (5:36 p.m. Saturday ET), the airline said.

"The object, believed to be an explosive device, has successfully been retrieved from the aircraft which was destined to Paris," Kenya Airport said in a statement.

A suspicious device that prompted a bomb scare on an Air France flight to Paris was a hoax, the airline's boss has said.

Flight 463 from Mauritius was forced to make an emergency landing in Mombasa, Kenya, after the object was discovered in the toilets of the aircraft, which was carrying 473 people.

Kenyan authorities initially said the item was a bomb and had been removed by the country's navy to be detonated.

But Frederic Gagey, the head of Air France, said investigations revealed the device was made of cardboard, paper and a household timer.

"This object did not contain explosives," he told a news conference in Paris.

Yeah, the Cdn crowd at the Sakura Hostel off Hisago Dori seems to have occasional bouts of Maple Leaf patch fever, but the ones I meet all seem to be pretty prairified so maybe it's just the city/bumfuck-ville time lag, like rednecks with hippy hair. The bit that worries me is how many nice Americans I keep meeting in Asakusa (Cuz's Home Ground, etc) and Down Here and how utterly douchey the Cdns I meet are, though to be fair, all the Cdns I have met both there and down here are all JETs or alumni and the Americans aren't........... but it makes me think I need to rethink the Cdn Flag stitched on the inside of my brain BTW, I am fully hooked on this nicer hotel routine as well, esp. since my definition of that runs at about 5,000 yen per night. I just figured out how to make a proper bowl of soba with only the provided kettle, so I may never stay in a hostel again.

BTW, even I can tell the difference between surrender monkey French and Cdn French, and I don't talk no French no how. But like Coligny said, if they don't have some education or culture it's worse than full on Asstralian or a bad New England accent.

When I was on JET in Saitama the Canadians had the worst reputation among other JETs.

Yeah, you've mentioned that but I can't remember why. Was it that Rah Rah Maple Leaf crap or were they just A'holes in general? The Maple Leaf Forever crap can be good internet fodder but actually doing that in a social situation appalls me. 6 of 10 of the Americans in the Kanazawa area were a bunch of fat cliquey sorority boys but they had all come from the same college and were posted together, and everybody else agreed they were just generic idiots. The Canadian ones were a little rough around the edges but they were good drinking buddies and came through when I needed help a few times (I was on reasearch up in the hills and often pretty cabin feverish). I always wondered why they would post more than 3 of any one nationality to one locale but the whole recruitment system struck me as a complete shambles. One thing I know is to get ready to run away when a not overly fit young NAm'ican woman tells me she's a JET, especiallly if they mention their Master's degree within 3 minutes of first meeting. I like these new type over 35ers trained teacher types I have met here and there the past few years. Maybe that's just because the kids are so f'in stoopid these days and I am too old to put up with them?

Anyways, I get the feeling we're wearing out our welcome in the Anglosphere and it's not just that kneejerk anti-American BS or our recent adventures bombing Syrian refugees, but to be fair all the stereotypes were mostly BS from back in the day when only rich and well bred Cdns could afford to travel. Lots of Cdns are as rough as gritty sandpaper.

Turkey downs Russian military aircraft near Syria’s border

Turkish military aircraft shot down a Russian jet Tuesday after Turkey says it violated its airspace near the border with Syria.

Russian officials confirmed that a Russian warplane had been shot down but claimed it had been flying over Syria and had not violated Turkish airspace.

The plane was likely shot down “due to shelling from the ground,” the Russian Ministry of Defense said.

The incident could mark a major escalation in the airspace conflict over Syria that could seriously increase friction between Russia and the West since Turkey is a member of NATO.
