3 Japanese students killed in California car crash

Three Japanese college students were killed and five others were injured when the car they were in veered off a California freeway and struck a power pole, officials said Friday.

The eight students were trapped in the 2000 Honda Prelude after the crash late Thursday on state Route 78 in Oceanside, California Highway Patrol Officer Jim Bettencourt said.

The car went down an embankment and struck the pole, shearing it in half and leaving power lines dangling, Bettencourt said. The lines did not touch the ground.

The 19-year-old male driver and two passengers — a man and woman — were pronounced dead at the scene. Two women and three men suffered moderate to major injuries.

Eight people in a Honda Prelude? I thought the phone booth stuffing craze ended in the fifties.

Car buffs! Was the 2000 Honda Prelude the one with the seat recliner lever in the middle of the car rather than the outside edges, so that you could "whoops, slipped!" and send your passenger into a supine position for your ensuing mutual pleasure?

That's a lot of people in a Prelude but it's not that unusual for students to do that. Especially not broke Japanese ryugakusei.

From a year ago...but the video just released, despite claims that it was edited, still apparently shows the police car, speeding through residential streets, without lights on: http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/que ... -1.1912506

Steve Vaccaro, the lawyer representing the family of slain pedestrian Ryo Oyamada, says that recently released video shows that the NYPD cruiser that struck and killed the 24-year-old likely did not have its emergency lights on, despite reported police claims. Vaccaro has brought a civil suit against the department that alleges it dispersed witnesses, failed to properly record evidence at the crime scene and tampered with one key witnesses account after Oyamada's death.

In Rio de Janeiro drivers don't use their headlights and don't stop at red lights at night due to a very reasonable fear of being car jacked. They give a quick flash of their headlights when they get close to an intersection which basically means get the fuck out of the way if you're a pedestrian. It made crossing the street drunk at night extra exciting.

Students killed in Seattle bus crash were from four countries

Four college students killed in the crash of their charter bus and an amphibious tour bus on a Seattle bridge were from Austria, China, Indonesia and Japan, their school said on Friday.

The dead were Claudia Derschmidt, 49, of Austria; Privando Putradanto, 18, of Indonesia; Mami Sato, 36, from Japan; and Runjie Song, a 17-year-old from China, North Seattle College said in a statement.

About 90 firefighters and medics responded to the scene of Thursday afternoon's head-on collision on the busy Aurora Bridge, and about 50 people were treated at hospitals, authorities said.

The college said several students remained in critical condition, and other students and a North employee sustained serious injuries.

The crash left the charter bus caved in with glass and debris on the ground, and the Ride the Ducks amphibious bus also crumpled and missing a front wheel.
