This is just a photo I saw on twitter, I am not sure of the context but it appears to be related to whaling.
For the linguistically challenged: New Zealand's true objective: to harm Japan's international image.
This is NHK by the way.

NZ just got a resolution passed at the recent IWC meeting to indefinitely postpone Japan's return to "research whaling," (which Japan is saying they're going to do next season), so it is very likely related to that. Unfortunately that resolution is not legally binding.

And to play the fence, how is it not absolutely true, and therefore newsworthy? Whaling isn't illegal, but Panda Lovers usually are.

I've read that as well, and I agree it's probably related. Does anybody know why they IWC can't/won't pass one which *is* legally binding? I'm very curious.

It is a tricky and interesting question. It seems a tad strong for opinion, but probably fits in that category. What are your thoughts?
As I say, I haven't seen the context of this particular NHK report, but I would hazard a guess that unlike the Debito piece, it doesn't venture into the territory of misreporting events (the reason the accused was first approached, the length of time he was held)

I think it's just that the IWC doesn't have that sort of authority. I think Japan could simply end its membership in the IWC and massacre as many whales as it likes, but the benefits of staying in (i.e. they can exploit the "research" loophole in whale-rich waters, plus the ability to influence voting through various well-known but nefarious means) outweigh the benefits of dropping out. Don't quote me on that though.

If that is so, then is NZ more interested in making Japan look bad, than they are in stopping whale harvesting? .
