Russian Shenanigans

Japan protests after 'Russian' plane enters airspace

Tokyo has lodged a protest with Moscow after a foreign aircraft -- believed to be Russian -- briefly violated its airspace, prompting Tokyo to scramble four fighter jets, government officials said Wednesday.

The foreign ministry made the protest shortly after the plane entered Japanese airspace off the coast of the northernmost main island of Hokkaido, near a disputed island chain, on Tuesday afternoon.

"We made the protest through the Russian embassy in Tokyo," a foreign ministry official told AFP.

"The Russian side did not confirm the case, only saying they will check."

The Japanese Air Self-Defense Force scrambled four jets to head off the intruder, which it believed was Russian after analysing its course, a defence ministry official said.

If confirmed, this would be the first time Russian planes have entered Japanese airspace since August 2013, when two Tu-95 Russian strategic bombers were intercepted off the southwestern Okinoshima Island, the ministry said.

Sixteen seconds after entering Japanese airspace, the plane left toward the Kuril island chain, claimed by Tokyo but controlled by Russia, the ministry added.

Must have been a drunk mistake, when they fly their Bears inbound on purpose they never leve before taking pictures with the intercepting fighters...

Also... Can we put the Tomcats and AIM54 back in service ? Sort of feels like they might finally be needed...

The bacteria were originally found on Mamontova Gora - Mammoth Mountain - in Siberia's Sakha Republic, also known as Yakutia, in 2009 by Dr Anatoli Brouchkov, head of the Geocryology Department, Moscow State University. Similar bacteria were discovered by Siberian scientist Vladimir Repin in the brain of an extinct woolly mammoth preserved by permafrost.

Describing the discoveries as a 'scientific sensation' and an 'elixir of life', Yakutsk epidemiologist Dr Viktor Chernyavsky said: 'The bacteria gives out biologically active substances throughout its life, which activates the immune status of experimental animals.' As a result, 'mice grannies not only began to dance, but also produced offspring'.

If the same substance were to be given to people, it could cause a significant improvement in their health, leading to the discovery of an 'elixir of life', said Dr Chernyavsky.

I read that news too, but I figured it had too much of a BS factor.

Russia building new military bases on islands claimed by Japan

Russia has begun building two modern military compounds on the far eastern Kuril islands, defence minister Sergei Shoigu said Tuesday, heightening long-running tensions with Japan over the disputed islands.

Russia is "actively carrying out construction of military compounds on the islands of Iturup and Kunashir", Shoigu said at a meeting with military top brass, according to the ministry's website.

Relations between Moscow and Tokyo have been strained for decades because of the status of the four southernmost islands in the Kuril chain, known as the Northern Territories in Japan.

Yes, but Japan doesn't recognize those claims. I'm usually neutral about who is right in these situations but this is one where Japan can eat a dick. They're lucky the only territory they lost after the war was a few small crappy islands.

I completely agree with this - people here should consider themselves lucky that they surrendered before Stalin invaded Hokkaido (planned for the end of August 1945). The Soviets probably would have probably done what they did in those islands, East Prussia, and eastern Poland - basically expelled the locals.

What the Russians could have done is irrelevant here.

What they did is important: invading a country that had already surrendered.

I am with Japan on this.

I don't know the history on this but weren't those islands in dispute with Russia long before WWII?

According to that wiki, there was an original agreement, followed by military backed land grabs by both countries that have brought things back somewhat near that original agreement....but I say fuck the nationalists of either country because:

The Ainu or the Aynu (Ainu アィヌ Aynu; Japanese: アイヌ Ainu; Russian: Айны Ajny), and in historical Japanese texts Ezo/Emishi/Ebisu (蝦夷) or Aino (アイノ) are an indigenous people of Japan (Hokkaido, and formerly northeastern Honshu) and Russia (Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands).

and...

Ainu view
Some individuals of the Ainu also claim the Kuril Islands, on the basis that their ethnic group inhabited the archipelago and Sakhalin prior to the arrival of Japanese and Russian settlers in the 19th century.

In 2004, the small Ainu community living in Kamchatka Krai wrote a letter to Vladimir Putin, urging him to reconsider any move to award the Southern Kuril islands to Japan. They also urged him to recognize the Japanese genocide against the Ainu people, which was turned down by Putin.
