Rachael Yamagata is being promoted as the "next" Norah Jones or Fiona Apple depending on who you read.
Her father is a Japanese lawyer and her mother a German/Italian school principal. Seems they divorced when she was 2 and she shuttled between them in NY and Washingon as she grew up.
Her promotional campaign has picked up speed in the US and is just getting to the UK now. Dunno about Japan. Her press coverage doesn't highlight Japan in her background so it is probably as relevant for her as India is for Norah Jones.

Not really my taste although she has an interesting voice.
