That does look like a nice bit of kit. Much more comprehensive display than the TERRA-P+ (but quite a bit more expensive too ... like JPY 119,700 on the river).

SafeCast seems to be quite smitten with their choice of detector, the Inspector Alert or the RadAlert.

Prices seem not too bad also, but I'm trying to get SafeCast to send us a few mobile and static probes for installment up in Sendai and Ebisu Circuit...

The detectors devised by Hidehito Nakamura, an assistant professor at Kyoto University in western Japan, in cooperation with Teijin Ltd, cut costs by 90 percent from existing devices, many of which come from foreign firms.

"We're aiming to have a final product by the end of September, given the ever-increasing demand following the March earthquake," said Toru Ishii, a sales executive at Teijin.

Nakamura came up with "Scintirex," a plastic resin that emits a fluorescent glow when exposed to radiation. The resin acts as a sensor within the radiation detectors, allowing measurements of radiation.

The new material is expected to drastically cut costs for high-demand personal radiation detectors and larger survey meters to be used for commercial or official purposes.

Teijin's PR department estimates that sensors for detection devices will become available to high priority government organizations and companies as early as next month at approximately 10,000 yen ($130) -- one-tenth of the cost of currently available materials.

Meh, the idea is to provide sensors for detection devices used the shitheads/liars in "high priority government organizations and companies", I doubt the ordinary public will see cheaper detectors for several years if ever (since T.I.J.).

Sounds like a scintillation type detector (and thus the "Scintirex" name). Not as accurate as detectors that use Geiger-Mü]unless[/U] they're built with with a precision scintillating element and photomultiplier tube (expensive device and complex electronics) to accurately measure the light output from the scintillator. Probably won't get much accuracy in a 10K yen widget.

Nonetheless, if the thing can provide approximate readings* it could be very useful for the average Taro and Hanako to keep track of radiation in the environment. Sounds good.

* Sorta like 1) Relax, 2) Start packing, 3) Pack faster, and 4) Drop everything and get the fuck out of there.

Still running around doing the O-Bon relative visitations and haka-mairi.

Today we went over to Kakuda, only about 20 minutes drive from where I live, to visit a relative who is a small-scale cattle farmer, so I did a few quick measurements around the place.

1m over the gravel in his parking lot the radiation level was about 0.33 µSv/h. That's a bit higher than where I live, which figures because Kakuda is closer to Fukushima, but still not alarming

But at a distance of about 1m from a pile of hay bales used as part of the cattle feed the reading was 1.9 ~ 2.0 µSv/h. Not good.

The hay is contaminated, as expected. He hasn't used that hay as feed since the problem came to light, and cattle shipments from Miyagi have been halted so in theory the problem has been nipped in the bud. But there is still a problem.

That's not a bad looking piece of kit. Wonder about the sensitivity and subsequently the reliability of the device against more expensive equipment.

Too bad I don't own an iPhone to test it out on...

The non-profit, radiation-watch.org, had their Frisk device tested by an independent service, but sadly there is no comparison to other types of equipment.

I really like this little pocket geiger counter thingy (and it's cheap, too). Stick the detector and front-end electronics in a Frisk box or similar, and plug it into your iPod or iPhone for the UI and processing. Very cool. Looking at the test results it seems that it isn't super accurate under all conditions, but consistently close is plenty good enough for people who just want know if the radiation levels they're measuring are safe or not.

The day when you can pop down to the convenience store and pick up a usable radiation detector may not be too far off. That'll be nice. It'll put an end to bullshit figures from nuke plant operators and the government.

The democratization of radiation monitoring is spreading.

One noontime news program today was introducing a number of rice farmers who have purchased their own lab-grade geiger counters to test their produce. More of a double-check, because they don't trust the government (gee, wonder why not), and want to do everything they can to assure the consumer that their produce is safe to eat.

One store has installed two expensive chamber-type radiation detectors to check food samples. They installed two devices from different manufacturers at a cost of about 4 million yen so they can crosscheck the results to be sure that the food is safe.
