Softbank iphone 4s ios 6.1.1 upgd 'no service'

Postby Coligny » Tue Feb 19, 2013 9:59 am

After upgrading and jailbreaking all my IOcraps to 6.1 from 5.x without any trouble (including my 4s kddi who is more kitted that a yankee honda civic), i tried to do a simple IOs upgrade ( to 4s specific 6.1.1 ios) on me julie plain jane Iphone 4s (never jailbroken, dropped or anything ungodly ever done to it.)

pluged to itunes, back up
do the update...
since then, wifi ok
but "no service" for the carrier part, phone just don't work as a phone anymore.

tried all the firmware, zeroing and factory resets possible without result.

has anyone gotten in and out of that mess ?
would a jailbreaking + some black magic work ?
Might really soon just drop it to softbank and tell them to deal with their shit...

(i repeat, this now broken phone have never seen any hack or tweak in its life, ever..., had only few podcasts and basics apps loaded)

Although it may end in disappointment, I would first try making it Softbank's problem to fix.

There, I was able to reply without any ironic "it just works!" comment.

PS, I don't suppose it is anything to do with these problems?

Don't get me started, one of my (luckily non work related) machines auto updated my win8 and apparently the update didn't like my SSD driver or something. It sent it into an endless loop of "repairing drive...can't repair...can't refresh...can't go back to most recent system backup....only reformat and reinstall" Luckily, besides the OS and a few free applications, nothing lost but time....still WTF?

Anyhow, back on topic. I'd take it to AU and attack them over it.

Put the phone into recovery mode and then do a restore from iTunes. This will completely overwrite everything (OS+data) on the phone and should give you a functioning device. This is generally the best way to upgrade anyway as you don't get any stray bits of crap from the previous OS version left on the phone.

When you do the restore I suggest you manually choose the IPSW file to be sure you are getting 6.1.1. On the Mac you do this by holding the "option" (alt) key when you click the Restore button. This should bring up a dialog box allowing you to manually select the IPSW to use. (On Windows it is shift+click restore.)

The iPhone Enterprise configuration tools let you look at logs as well. There might be something in there about your problem.

D00d.. check to upgrade the firmware on your SSD, especially if it's a crucial CTxxxM4, I have 2 linux file server that started crashing with kernel dumps because the sytem HD was remounted RO and then unreadable, usually 1 to 5 minutes after boot, any command or deamon loaded before that would work, after... nada until reboot I assumed the system SSD wuz dead, but it was some sort of firmware logging buffer for the SMART function bug appearing after the 6th month of use... AFter the update I didn't even needed to reinstall the OS.

Nope, and it seems bad, vodaphone urged its users not to upgrade to 6.1 or 6.1.1 because of the same clusterfuck. Since softbank is ex vodaphone i'm betting that i am in the same boat.

Since thanks to apple assholish move to forbid downgrades i can't go back to 6.0 or 5.1 either i have to go to softbank so they can certainly do nothing except switch it for another one or more likely wait for the 6.2 upgrade and pray...

Might go to ask softbank just in case they have a magic trick, but i even did the full wipe restore with the combo key -plug into itunes-restart voodoo without getting any service back...

The usual asshat behaviour of apple was sort-of ok when everything 'just worked' but these kind of screwups (do the official update and get fucked) are simply unacceptable...

This is very unlike the Coligny we know and lov....err, well, know, anyway.

Even if it gets you nowhere, I get the feeling you will enjoy making the Softbank staff squirm as you complain about their useless service. You have nothing to lose by going there, and besides the entertainment they might be able to make that iPod into a phone again. For extra fun, demand a pro rata discount on basic charges for the time you cannot connect to the phone network.

Went to softbank... she tried the sim in another iphone, worked. (should have checked the ios version)
tried another sim in julies iphone, no service...
gave me a paper to call a hotline for something something... it's a crapfest between softbank and apple anyway, can just hope the ios 6.2 will fix this... there is not much point at raising a shitstorm... plus...
Was definately around 40yo but with superb hairdo and make up, glasses with carefully forged arms... I wish she could have taught me julie how to put makeup on... because she always look like she got her training at a toyota paint repair shop and didn't pay too much attenshion to the lecture... i wonder what kind of miracle prevent her from using body filler in the process...

I suggest wiping the current iOS first. You can do a full reset from the Settings app under General. It's at the bottom.

got the 'softbank' for few minutes, tried to call and be called, nothing going through... reboot...
no service back again...

will try another full rinse reinstall...

Noticed that back from the shop the mms address seems to have been restored, while after another full zeroing it was blank again...

Will have me julie call the support tomorrow...

Judging by the 6.1.2 readme, nothing concern the phone part, will have to wait (and a little longer thanks to this) for the 6.2

So yesterday i didn't do anything but in the middle of the afternoon 'no service' was replaced by 'softbank' with 0 bars of reception. I tried to call home, it rung once the back to 'no service'.
This morning me julie was awoken by the sound of mms incommming, 'softbank' with 0 bars again. she tried to call me, it went through, called the house, also worked, in the parking she reached 4 bars.

There is 0 logic...

But i'm starting to wonder how well that phone was working before i did the upgrade... and if there is a loose connection somewhere for the 3g antenna...

This does sound more like a hardware issue than a software one.

i'd say software aggravated hardware fault...

But apple have always been excellent at weird subsystem with a life on their own making troubleshooting a nightmare...

At my first install of MacOS 8 from 7.5.3 I could not boot back to any 7.x system, dead mac icons all the time, had to stick with 8 (which until 8.5 tended to suck a bit). Seems that on my masheen (LC 630 if i remember well) there was a kludge with the power manager subsystem that go crapped on the french release of os 8. And you had to hard reset the moterboard to put an older os back, i don't remember if it was a remove battery overnight or push a microswitch on the board while humming 'when johnny come marching home*'...

Also fun was the LC 475... if you booted without any clock backup battery, the display port was disabled...

I would not be surprised if the iphone had these kind of wtf engineering happenstance...

*the 'bank heist' theme from Die Hard with a vengeance (3) if you prefer...
