FS: Apple MacBook Pro Core2Duo 2.33 GHz (price drop!)

Postby FG Lurker » Fri Mar 09, 2007 9:58 am

Okay, I have decided that since I am going to have to stay on WinXP for the foreseeable future that it makes more sense for me to just buy a ThinkPad and use that instead.

So, unfortunately the MacBook Pro is going to have to go. It is the latest model, the top-end 15" 2.33GHz model:

2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1440 x 900 TFT (non-glossy)
2GB Memory
120GB Hard Disk
6x Dual Layer SuperDrive
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 256MB GDDR3 Memory

Also included:
Dave 6 License ($119)
Parallels License ($80)
Very nice soft case to put the machine in before putting it in your carrying bag. I bought this from Apple when I bought the machine.

The machine currently has a Japanese Keyboard, but I can get this switched to an English one at the Apple Store if you would like. I have the original receipts and all packaging. The machine was purchased new in the Shinsaibashi Apple Store in December of last year.

Condition is nearly like-new, there are no obvious signs of wear or use. I will try to grab some photos of it soon.

These are currently selling for 310,000 new, plus the $200 in software & the case.

Obviously I don't want to take too much of a bath on the machine, it has only had a couple of months of use (I didn't start using it right away due to lack of time).

Ideally I would like 280,000 for the set, but I am open to offers as well. Please PM if you have questions or would like to make an offer.

It's a sweet machine GG!

Extremely fast yet not so huge that it can't be moved around. I looked at the 17" one but they're just too big to carry IMO.

The only reason I am selling it is that while it is an awesome machine, it doesn't run Windows quite as well as a ThinkPad would. Basically this comes down to keyboard support, but the brightness controls for the screen under XP are not as fine as they are under OSX.

I'm planning to replace it with a ThinkPad Z61 at a cost of about 300,000yen. Same basic machine (15.4" wide screen, etc), just in a dedicated Windows package.

Am thinking of it mainly due to the parallels. We have a new person in the office that needs to run both Windows and Mac for her work - mainly as lots of the support sites for carriers only work with Windows machines.

Personally I am still on my Powerbook which is just mac but it does bug me that there are things that I can't do due to these STOOPID restrictions.

The only problem with buying this machine is that once you play with it, you'll want one too! ;)

Cosmetically the machine is also in excellent condition. I never wear a watch while working on it (to not scratch the palm rest area), and for the most part I have been using an external keyboard and mouse anyway... It's about as close to new as you can find.

What no Parallels Charlie?

Lurker, I'm sorry it didn't work out for you. At least you gave it a shot, and that's a lot more than most folks would do. Maybe you'll be back someday, and you've stated your main complaints. I bet they are valid.

GG, the 15 is indeed the one for portable use. The 17 is too much, like Lurker said. I think you would love the 'puter. It's a step up from a G4 laptop, for sure.

Yeah, poor Chuckles bought in at the wrong time... I'd feel bad for him if he wasn't....well, Chuckles.

A note to Chuckles though (who can't see this cause I am on his ignore list): Adobe CS3 is getting closer to release. Although the G5s are still selling for reasonable prices now, once designers can use Intel-based Macs (without being stuck in emulation mode) I suspect G5 prices will dive rather dramatically. If you are thinking of unloading the G5 now would be a very good time to do so.

I was a Mac user for many years (and before that Apple II), but I need an efficient keyboard system, and I really need good VNC support. It is definitely possible that I buy another Mac, as I do like the OS and hardware, apart from the problems I have had.

mr. sparkle wrote:and you've stated your main complaints. I bet they are valid.

They're all very valid for me, but I'm not sure how many other people would face the same problems. I suspect that quite a lot of IT people who work with Windows would though.

As an aside, if the Mac experiment had worked for me, I would have ended up buying a MacBook for my wife, and 2 or 3 Mac Minis for mother/father-in-law/sister... So there is at least a bit of a spin-off effect from this, although obviously not anything that would affect Apple's sales numbers! If Apple catered more to people who take care of other people's computers though, I think it could help their bottom line.

I will be getting a ThinkPad T60 next week.

I'll drop the price on the MacBook Pro to 230,000yen (firm).

It's been a rather expensive experiment, but that's life I suppose!

All corporate notebooks have a lot of problems though... They tend to get treated like shite because the users don't own them.

What sorts of issues are you seeing AO?

8 Cores !!!!!!!!

FGL - I hope you had no problems selling it in the end; I wouldve bought it from ya and paid the international shipping, had I not just purchased a 13" Macbook and if Leopard & updates werent right around the corner...
In the meantime, I'll probably just get a 22" Samsung LCD *sw33tsp0t* for some more screen realestate.

Most forum I dwell, you need a 1 year + 500 post minimum before being allowed to post in for sale/trade/buy threads...

You registered today, it's your first post and you are hijacking a zombie thread...

So, either you have someone already knowing you here that can vouch for you...

Or I suggest you return the computer were you stole it.
