My wife wasn't following the Olympics at all and knows/cares nothing about figure skaters. When I told her a Japanese chick won, she came in the room and took one look at her and said, "She looks Chinese."
How dare a gaijin say such a thing, huh? Only one problem, Jack. A gaijin didn't say it: my wife is Japanese.
If you knew as much about Japan as you think you do, you'd know that there are lots of celebrities in Japan that are not "100% Japanese". Sometimes their background is talked about in the open, sometimes it is a secret (that comes out much later), and sometimes everyone knew all along but just pretended like they didn't know (example: who the hell didn't know Akiko Wada was Korean? BTW, if I asked you guys to guess how tall she is, I bet a lot of people would say she's like 6' or more because of how she towers over everyone: she's only 5'8"! Similarly, Arakawa looks tall - and she's only 5'6"! Japan, the land where normal size humans are giants.)
Arakawa may look Chinese, but she's typical Japanese when it comes to one thing: "I went to the ice rink and saw the kids with cute clothes. I wanted to wear the beautiful costumes." Any Japanese knows that the uniform is more important than the actual substance of the activity, huh?
