Billionaire Cannibals Wipe Out $4 Billion in Son-Mikitani Fight
bloomberg.com / Oct. 9, 2013
Billionaire Masayoshi Son, Japan’s second-richest person, mounted an attack on the next wealthiest, Hiroshi Mikitani, wiping out a combined $4.3 billion in their companies’ market values.
Son, chairman of Yahoo Japan Corp. (4689), eliminated fees the Internet search and shopping business charges for online stores. The move is a direct challenge to Mikitani’s Rakuten Inc. (4755), the country’s largest Internet shopping mall.
The rivalry pits Rakuten’s model of charging businesses fees to operate shops in its online mall against Son’s portal and retail site, which got more than half of revenue last fiscal year from advertising. Investors bet the earnings of both companies will suffer, sending Rakuten plunging 12 percent in Tokyo trading yesterday. Yahoo Japan slumped 6.5 percent.

And an almost pretend internet. The fact that Yahoo is Japan's main portal (and running on an interface even the ailing Yahoo US ran about 10 years ago) is the real joke here. Don't get me going on Rakuten's "interface".

Operate a shop on Yahoo without the monthly BS fee...that's a good thing.

“We are not planning to change our fee structure at all,” Jeremy Tonkin, spokesman at Tokyo-based Rakuten, said by phone. “Rakuten operates from a position of strength in the e-commerce market.”

LOL Rakuten, this kind of attitude is what seems to fuck most Japanese companies into eventual submission/decline.

Yes and no...

Unlike Google and Facebook that are running on arrogance and stupidity. Rakuten is providing a service that is his primary business without triggering much hatress from the userbase.
Could google and rakuten be replaced overnight.
Yes
The difference being I can't see much reason to stick with google
I can't see much reason to dump rakuten...

Because the always-being-updated interfaces of Google are so good.
