I assume that these are so-called "phishing scams".

Somebody must be stealing the graphics from Yahoo BB Japan and constructing their own spam emails, sending them to anyone they can find on Yahoo asking them to change their password.

Phishing emails are dressed up to look like they are authentic Yahoo emails, so many people will probably be fooled and send their password and username info through the email.... and into the hands of the people running the scam.

Suspended term for 'phishing' suspect

A Japanese court has handed down a suspended jail term to a 42-year-old computer engineer over an internet scam using emails and fake websites to steal personal information, officials said.

The Tokyo District Court sentenced Kazuma Yabuno to 22 months in prison, suspended for four years, the court officials said on Monday.

According to the ruling, the defendant created and ran a website that looked like Yahoo! Japan's internet auction website, and stole personal information from internet users in February.

The case was Japan's first in relation to "phishing," one of the fastest growing types of fraud used to steal money, credit card numbers, passwords or identity information.

"His responsibility was grave as he obtained information and breached privacy by making use of his ample knowledge about computers," Judge Mitsuaki Takayama told the court.

But the judge said the court rejected prosecutors' requests for two years in jail and delivered the suspended term because he did not use the information for other crimes. AFP

So, no phishing for 4 years for Kazuma-kun.
