Diesel

Postby Coligny » Mon Jan 31, 2011 3:32 pm

I was wondering, does the local toyu heating oil-kerosene-ish-stuff is the same a diesel for cars ?(*)

In France it's exactly the same, only heating oil is tinted pink since it's not the same tax, you are allowed to use it for your vehicles on private property but must use the normally taxed one for public roads.

Because...

The Nissan Xtrail Diesel is finally available with automatic tranny... But there's barely any diesel gas stations around...

Also... diesel in case of fire tend to burn, not explode... since my survivalist side push me to store a bit at home fo a better escape in case the germans comes back again... I'd be a little moar confident to replace my gasoline stockpile with diesel reserve. Also, in case of zombie apocalypse it's considered much easier to find home made replacement out of cooking oil or other ersatz....

(*) and to some extend aviation fuel... but it usually screw you out of warranty...

I don't know if it's the same stuff, it smells different.
having said that though, the wife's uncle uses it in the engine on his fishing boat. He also adds cooking oil to it, depending on the season.
But there again he's 90 yrs old and lives in a shack on a beach in the inland sea.

Different boiling points. When crude oil is distilled kerosine comes off first, and then the fuel oils. But people in very cold climates do mix kerosine with diesel fuel for better cold-weather performance.

Gonna buy an X-Trail? That is a great car for the price. I test drove one (gasoline version) when I was buying my current car and basically fell in love. But practicality got the better of me and I decided I really didn't need the 4WD, or the size (and extra tax), so I ended up with a smaller wagon instead. They didn't have a diesel version with automatic transmission at the time either.

If I was buying now, I might just go for the diesel version.

Make sure to check locally- Tokyo-to has restrictions on diesel vehicles (that may or may-not include new generation clean diesels). Many people had to get rid of older, dirtier diesels years ago if they wanted to park in Tokyo.

Noooooooo.
The toyu heating oil-kerosene lacks enough lubrication properties/additives to burn in high revving diesel engines for cars with hyper-delicate injector systems and emission controls on modern clean diesel engines.

Kerosene is "about" the same as #1 diesel for cars but Kerosene is thiner, hotter, and has less energy than diesel which drives the car computer emission controls crazy.
Kerosene works ok in lower-tech diesel farm equipment and older pre-1990s diesel cars.

Gunna buy nothing for now, but judging by the time it take for any decision, have to start looking now if we want to have some clue for the day the shopping cart die. He's only 5 year old. which is brand new by my standards but since it's out of warranty it has been decided that in case of breakdown it will be replaced instead of repaired.

At first we thought we were going to be obliged to change in september for something bigger as dadinlaw has eyesight problems, but his driver license is supposed to be still good for 2 years (he's 70yo since last year).

I was excited by the Juke, love the ugly -in-a-good-way- face, but everything else is... average... When I saw the second hand price in england for the diesel Allroad Quattro I was all-a-happy, then I saw the local second hand prices... and was all-a-WTF?! Technically speaking subarus are exciting the chassis design is awesome... but they are -in a bad way- ugly... and I can't stand Totoyas. As of now... for me the most exciting-bang-for-the-buck-ish car is the Skoda Yeti or the Dacia Duster (groupe Renault-Nissan), but neither are available locally...

(and I have an obscene amount of free time... and is moderately bored...)

Ya, the restrictions were on the older cars, the newer Nissans and carmakers with "clean" diesels are ok now. Wondering if a Toyota Hilux/Tundra/Megacruiser diesel with propane injectors will pass shaken?

*edit* Kerosene will definitely NOT WORK with diesels.

I was actually wondering almost the same thing.
Used to drive a diesel Hilux Surf before moving into the metro area a few years ago (had to ditch the Surf). Moving back out to the countryside soon, and I was thinking about picking up a Surf. Looks like lots of turbo diesel Surfs on Goo-net dot com etc. so I guess they are still OK.

Interesting about the new diesels. I wonder if Volkswagon has their little Polo diesel available here? I want to get something for my wife to drive around and that would be a good fit.

I wish Audi would come out with their LeMans winning diesel in a sports car or SUV/crossover. 4wd, spikes and 500 bhp will make winter o so fun...
