internet laws in Japan

Postby mclaney » Fri Aug 18, 2006 1:08 am

I am very confused about what constitutes legal browsing in Japan, and I've been unable to find much valid information online.

Magazines and movies are censored in Japan. Does it follow that viewing online uncensored porn (with adult, consenting models) is illegal while you're in Japan?

That seems logical to me, but it also seems reasonable to expect a lot of "DON'T LOOK AT THE NAUGHTY BITS ONLINE WHILE YOU'RE HERE, OR YOU'LL BE DEPORTED AFTER YOU SERVE TIME!" messages online.

Thanks for any solid information.

Since the J-cops can't even keep a lid on the printed pr0n market I wouldn't worry too much about looking at The Hun while you're in Japan.
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Pornography in Japan at AllExperts - Internet

Pornographic material has existed from the earliest day of computer networking and internet has helped to connect those interested in specific genres. In these early days, the presence of pornographic materials often resulted in heated arguments between those who did not want any such material that can be anonymously accessed and those who believed that individuals can determine for themselves. The matter was eventually resolved by having either and both warnings and a password before pornographic materials.

I have wondered the same thing. I would assume that if you were arrested for anything related to that they would confiscate your computer and find everything in the temp, history files,... and make things worse, but you would probably be having worse problems going on than a few thumbnails in your temp folder if that happened.

I checked with a few other Japanese in my office and they all said that you are pretty much fine looking at uncensored porn, just as long as you don't show it to other people, or broadcast it on a large LCD TV in a restaurant(as one of them recommended against for some reason).
