According to this WSJ article Oxy is legal in Japan but you have to get permission in advance to bring it in.

Regardless of the result of the investigation do you think there's any chance she keeps her job?

Her job is to make sure that her employer's public relations are seen in the best light.

It is hard to see that she has fulfilled that, better than any alternatives inside or outside the company. I feel like a bastard for saying that (and it is not my decision to make) but PR is all about public image, and I am a member of the public and that is how it looks to me. A tough field to be in.

Wagyl makes good points, but yes. I hope so anyways. That sort of stupidity is often curable, and Being That American isn't much of a crime outside the interwebz. The duck face girl seems to have taken her idiocy to heart.

Don't these sort of big shot expat people come with professional bumwipers? Unbelievable her handlers didn't mention it to her. That's a major failure.

Handlers can only do what they have been informed about. If she didn't say that she was considering posting prescription medications to herself in a falsely labelled parcel, it is pretty hard to expect "don't post yourself prescription medications in falsely labelled parcels" to be in the standard checklist. Of course, it is standard PR to attribute your own failing to that of your underlings/handlers.

(I think I've mentioned before: someone I used to work with had as her previous job, that of handler to expat exec. You can imagine the morale boost every time she had to organise the lease on an apartment for her constant stream of bosses, the rental for which was many multiples her own salary...)

By the way, isn't "necklace" a pretty shitty disguise? If there's one thing customs would wan to confirm the value of, it's jewelry.

I can't begin to imagine how ridiculous the handler's job description must be, but given the number of instances of this sort of thing lately I would say that the handler department should have protocols in place. In a way it looks like a head on collision of "In the states it's normal" vs. some fairly serious Island Nation oversight (But it is Forbidden!!!). Especially given that with permission it is allowed. FTR, I don't blame any individual handler but the department concerned should get their heads out of their asses, given the number of legal addicts in the US, and I certainly think she is a big dummy for not checking herself.

On all my much ballyhooed national scholarships and fellowships the orientation programme was comically inadequate: it invariably consisted of a nice hello buffet and a few chauvinistic "Aren't You Lucky to live in Japan" for newbies and all alike, but this is Toyota, FFS.

That's true. They also spend some cash and time on this stuff. I think they xray scan virtually everything. Once I had some glue dots mailed to me.

Image

On an xray they would, I suppose look quite similar to tablets. In any case, the package was opened, checked and carefully resealed with a little note.

Yup, got sent some herbal tea from the UK recently - package opened inspected at customs, presumably as it looked like it contained something you could set fire to and inhale.

Ok, she is a yuppie pill popper. I tried to gov her the benefit of doubt but.......

A little tinfoil hat.... Maybe she was chosen for this position because there was a possibility that she would get in trouble with the j-cops. Now toyota has an excuse to use when they have to file their excuse paperwork for noncompliance. Oxycodone may be available in Japan but perhaps doctors happy to write out a prescription for it on request may not be quite so available?

What is it with USians and all these weirdly-named prescription drugs? Is life so bad there they can't get by without regular doses of Oxyrolodexene or Proxoxaxoxa or whatever?

If you watch the border security shows (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, US, UK), you know that they get people for pills through the mail all the time. Without even first reading the manifest or opening the package.

Modern x-rays understand "organic" matter which includes most pills, and it shows up on the TV screen in a special enhanced color to get the inspector's attention as you're never supposed to send ANYTHING organic through the international mail without declaring it. Pills, in particular, stand out due to their shape and numbers.

Might not have been that difficult. J Doctors are assholes when they can assert their god complexe.
But if they smell muney they sing a different song.
Totoya have more or less their own doctors.
Not on the payroll but as subcontractors.
They reimbourse their transport fees only if they drive Totoyas group cars.
But, they offer no employee discount to contractors.
I asked if I could come to give the finger myself to the headhunter...
(It was 10 years ago)(and would have had to move to Totoya-shi)

According to JiJi press,
the tablets “were divided into small groups and stored in a box wrapped with plastic cloth, where necklace and pendant containers were placed on the tablets.” Would the pills have been sent in an official container, they probably would have been sent back if found, or impounded with a warning, whereas hiding the contraband demonstrates intent on breaking the law.

Yep, she should have labeled it as "pearl necklace"...
