Then again, she is from the states; is prescription addiction not almost more respectable than being a garden variety boozer? If nothing else it was legal when she was still at home (assuming she had a prescription). Judging from news stories there seems almost an Oprah Fan cachet to having enough money to be hooked on something a physician told you to take. Maybe it's a more victim ready vice? If she had a prescription, then I hope so too. But I suspect that she didn`t have a prescription, or at least an legitimate one, since if she had one, it would have been news by now. A Toyota Motor Corp. senior executive who was arrested last week for allegedly violating Japan's drug law has said she mailed a controlled drug to ease pain in her knees, investigative sources said Tuesday, as police searched the headquarters of the automaker.

Julie Hamp, an American who heads Toyota's public relations, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of sending the painkiller oxycodone through the mail. In Japan, only designated people can import the prescription drug.

One of the sources quoted Hamp as saying she had imported the drug to alleviate pain in her knees.

In both of the cases I mentioned earlier - we were not `raided`, but instead we `invited` the investigator in and assisted as best we could. I am guessing that Toyota was raided because they supported their perp.

On knee pain - I know it well, and at no point has my doctor even hinted that pain relief might come in a pill – even though it has prevented me from sleeping; from driving more than 30 minutes at a time, or walking for more than 10 minutes or more. Of course my- pain is not debilitating, and maybe her pain is. Without those pills with her in jail these days, I presume that she is simply writhing on the floor as she grasps her knees.

Never underestimate the power of the fact that her countrymen to have been brought up to believe (1) that they live under the most perfect system which ever existed, and (2) that the rest of the world, naturally, emulates them. For many of them, it comes as a huge shock when they discover that this is not so.

That of course still does not excuse subterfuge in trying to hide what was in the parcel.

As always with these reports to the press about ongoing investigations, we at this stage only have the police side of the story, and even when her side of the story comes out the police have the advantage of a big head start to shape the public conversation.
