I think it just has to be valid for whatever visa length you'd be on when you enter the country...for example, Japan would be 90 days.

Remaining validity for purposes of entering Vietnam as a tourist? Have you checked the Vietnamese embassy website? From experience that's where you tend to find that kind of info.

Depends on the country. India wants at least 6 months even if you're applying for a shorter visa.

Japanese side should be no problem if you re-enter before your passport and visas expire.

If you do get a new passport before your trip and don't have time get the visa stamps transferred, you can simply take both.

Yes this is correct.

Most countries want 6 months validity for entering on a tourist. This is pretty standard. They usually let you slip by if it is 5 months but on the safe side it is best to get a new one.

But if you put in the application for a new one, you should have it back in time before you go. Then just take it to immigration to get your J-Visa stamps swapped in. Or as Yanpa said - just take both with you.

Coligny,

I was thinking about heading to Vietnam for a couple of weeks for Xmas/New Years. The Tokyo Embassy website has almost no visa info and I tried calling several times today but the line was always busy. How'd you get get your visa? Did you deal directly with the embassy or go through a travel agent?

http://www.myvietnamvisa.com/ or equivalent service

you get the paperwork, at Saigon airport you go to the visa on arrival counter, with their preapproval, photo, and dollars... and it's all good...

Beware that the pre approval document is sent by email and is usually containing all the name and passport numbers of the people arriving in the same timeframe as you. Not really ideal if you're paranoid...

Thanks.

I'm paranoid but not paranoid enough to skip the easy route and try to deal directly with the embassy. Since yesterday their homepage stopped working too. Maybe they're packing up and leaving Japan.
