Pls help! Re-newing work visa

Postby yurikamome » Fri Aug 17, 2007 11:54 pm

Hi All

My working visa is about to expire in early Oct 2007. I have a new company sponsor for re-newing my visa.

Problem is:
I resigned from my previous company back in Feb 2006. After that, I was on 'hello work' for income support while searching for a job. I couldn't find a job so in Dec 2006, I took on some freelance jobs. I made about 1.1million yen and the company paid me 10% less because they said that was for tax. Since then, I made no more money and lived off my savings.

If I apply for a new visa now via a new employer, will there be any problems? I mean, afterall, I have been unemployed for a year and a half.

Also, although the freelance company paid my taxes on the 1.1m, I got nothing to prove I paid...

So I think what I am worried about is:
1. finally found an employer after being unemployed for a year and a half
2. Paid no tax info for the 1.5 years in question
(well, no proof of the company paid)

Thanks in advance guys!

It's not clear what you are worried about - getting the visa or your potential tax bill?

I'm worried about not being able to get the visa due to being unemployed for so long and paid little taxes during that period (and no proof that I even paid)

I am not by any means an authority on this matter, but it is my understanding that immigration and the tax office are not inter-related. However, I know from experience that when renewing my visa, I was required to supply a statement (you can get this from your local yakusho) showing the taxes that I have paid over the past year. The two are not related, but if you have not paid any taxes during this period, it will show up on this document and I can see why this would cause problems...

One question I have is if you are doing cosultative type of work and receiving payments in cash, YOU are required to report this and handle all of the taxes that are due. If you have not done this, I am afraid you are S-O-L.
