Yokohammer wrote:"Yet" ... yes, that's worth keeping in mind, especially for the next few days.

I was once more reassured than anything after fairly strong quakes, subscribing to the theory that they "released pressure" and that a larger quake was unlikely to follow. The big quake up here completely trashed that theory. There were a couple of pretty big shakers in the few weeks immediately prior to the Big One, and one that was about a 5, I think, just two or three days before.

Not trying to be a scaremonger or anything, just suggesting caution for a while.

There was a 7.2 on March 9th followed by almost hourly M4 ~ M6 quakes until around 7am on the 11th.

It's a sign that Japan sits on the intersection of multiple tectonic plates .

Video is of the 2011 quake, not today's.

Tornado warning - WTF?

Postby BigInJapan » Sun Apr 14, 2013 5:58 pm

Not an earthquake, but I just heard my first ever tornado warning in 21 years here* in the land of the rising sun (I know they have occurred elsewhere around the country).
The local announcement from city hall just blasted a tornado warning (竜巻警報) over the loudspeaker system, saying to watch out for nasty looking cloud formations. The wind storm has changed into a nifty thunder and lightning storm, so who knows, my next post might be from the land of Oz...
*"here" is eastern Fukuoka BTW

Still there, BiJ?

I just saw the NHK Megaquake programme, one thing I learnt I didn't know before is that the 2011 quake was actually a series of 5 or so quakes (I'm not talking about aftershocks here) which started with the M9.0 one and continued southwards along the plate boundary with a bunch of M7+ all within a few minutes of each other, which explains why it went on so long. Logical when you think about it, I suppose.

Sure that's nuthing compared to mee:
I nearly rear ended an Audi A4 at the red light one day.
I was stopped behind. And felt a silent-deadly all-a-stucky.
So I try to push it hard. Unconsciensiously extending my right leg.
Who slipped from the brake pedal to the accell...
Lucky I was not bumper to bumper...
But nearly shat mahself...

/Now always put in neutral at the redlight
//especially when cutting the cheeze
///And putted a polyurethane sit cover... just in case...

Definitely a shaky day in the outlying islands...

Looking at the history for Miyakejima, it seems to have been pretty quiescent during the past few years, even after 3/11. Hmm.

Yup. Didn.'t really feel it here but the tv alert came on in the middle of the report on the Miyakejima quakes, which was doubly alarming.

If it's any consolation, I will be spending tomorrow morning on one of those bits of Tokyo made by dumping stuff Tokyoites threw away into to Tokyo Bay.
