Down to 930 now, and the barometer on my watch is falling already too (could just be coincidence though.) I sure hope it misses us, Typhoons make my allergies worse and I cracked a rib yesterday. It's not gonna be fun if I start coughing with a cracked rib..

Strongest typhoon in 10 years heading for Fukushima

As the weather agency issued warnings of torrential rain and strong winds, the operator of the Fukushima plant, Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO), said it was bracing for the storm after a series of leaks of radiation-polluted water.

It's kicked a bit further east so yes Tokyo and Fukushima are likely to get it full on. Sit tight folks. Coligny, Grumpy and I are off the hook a bit.

looking at the satellite view and projected path... your definition of "off the hook" seems rather optimistic... The rain is already quite good...

I was unceremoniously chucked out of the office (omae mona will get the reference), though 'tis merely raining slightly heavily.

I predict widespread public transportation stoppage tomorrow until 9 ~ 10am, leisurely breakfast here we come

I said off the hook a bit - which is true for us and to a lesser extent Nagoya - at least compared with the projected path at lunchtime. We are just on the edge of the 50knt wind area now. It's raining but not very heavily here.
Yet.

I just hope it doesn't kick west again. A bit further east again please.

Toyohashi City <foreign@anzen-ansin.net>

5:06 PM (2 hours ago)

to me
A large-scale strong Typhoon Number 26 has moved northwards from Nankai and will be approaching the Tokai area between late night on the 15th till morning of the 16th.
Please lock your doors securely and do not head outside during periods of strong wind and heavy rainfall.

大型で強い台風第26号が、日本の南海上を北上しており、15日深夜から16日の朝にかけて東海地方に最接近します。戸締りをしっかりして、暴風・大雨時には、外に出ないようにしてください。

On mah way to mah house built, as far as I can ascertain, at the apex of the "plateau" between the parallel water courses some way to the north and south (which would need to flood in biblical proportions to get anywhere near Chez Yanpa). Even the road outside slopes downwards in both directions, and I have yet to see significant puddlage build in the surrounding area. :smug:

And by a very odd co-incidence my house is in a similar location except the watercourses converge near the sea. Strange that we both bought a house well away from danger of flooding. :smug too:

This is starting to look kinda sucky (or blowy, if you prefer).
Schools will be closed in my area, and they've already announced that the trains will not run. That includes the Tohoku Shinkansen. Sounds like they're expecting some nasty shit.

I realise that there is a need for balance between the requirement to get the information out quickly with machine translation and the requirement to get the information out accurately with translation by something with flesh and blood and hopefully a brain, but I can't help thinking that the robots are trying to take over with this one. Make sure that doors and windows are closed securely, by all means, but suggesting there is a need to lock the door will bring on Coligny's nightmare of a zombie apocalypse.

Maybe the zombies have already got to the brains, which is why they are relying on machine translation so heavily.

The fucker is now south of Kansai.

Not directly hitting us but pretty much rain and some wind.

Nothing alarming here, though.

Hoping that Fukushima holds out well.

it's raining, OMFG!!!!!!

According to the US government this is a category 2 storm. From what I remember, that means a tree might get knocked down and the surfing will be good.

Great, the too cool for school doctrine applied with equivalent approximative knowledge to weather events...

At 50m/s that would make it a cat 3 hurricane. Not a harmless sounding category 2 storm...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saffir%E2% ... Category_3

I suppose that soon we'll have posts stating that it's not a typhoon since nobody was directly killed by the wind or the rain...

'merican government email wrote: Typhoon Wipha is changing to a north-northeast trajectory through the Western Pacific Ocean as a Category 2 storm. Affected areas can expect to see sustained winds of between 65 and 75 knots (approx. 75-86 mph) and gusts of up to 95 knots (approx. 109 mph) late Tuesday, October 15, and on Wednesday, October 16. Current forecasts say that Typhoon Wipha will affect most of Japan, from Okinawa and its outlying islands to Hokkaido. U.S. citizens living and traveling in Japan should take this information into account.

we no speak dat metric crap but 111mph is 2mph above 109 (we are talking gusts here). No one in the US worries until the SUSTAINED winds are over 100 mph. Shit, 100mph is only a $100 speeding ticket in most states.

If you get killed in this storm you probably live in a mobile home or a J-cardboard shack. If you get killed outside, you were stupid. This is all based on US data not "the government should do everything" type of data.
