It makes perfect sense that you should be treated like a fucking idiot.

Yeah of course. Lights. They could be the only possible thing that could be of danger in a TV studio.

They are under the lights so you can see them on TV.

What are you, 12 years old?

Have you ever seen reporters from other countries wear hardhats in their studio?

Fullback wrote:If you want to speculate, speculate about Monday and the next decade. This will change the entire energy system of Japan.

This will depend on what happens with the reactor. If the amount of radiation released is minimal and the containment system worked even in this beyond-worst-case scenario I think it might actually result in more nuclear power as this shows how well these plants can manage through even this sort of disaster.

Fullback wrote:What happens when factories open, shopping centers open, all the trains run, lights are on, heaters and air conditioning is running?

This is a big problem, and will be compounded further by the separation of Japan's electric grid into East (50Hz) and West (60Hz). AFAIK power plants in West Japan will not be able to help pick up the slack in East Japan. I expect most of East Japan is about to have very little cooling during the upcoming summer months but I guess we'll have to wait and see how many of these plants go offline permanently.

No, and the whole thing is a ridiculous prop.

Earlier today I was watching one of the channels and they cut to some reporters before they were completely ready. The reporters were standing in front of the camera holding their hard hats. When the feed suddenly went live you could tell that someone was motioning for them to quickly throw their hats on (the reporters glanced off to the side). They got them on as quickly as possible and looked a bit embarrassed. Anyway, ridiculous prop.

Energy prices are going to skyrocket. The anti-nuclear lobby will force more gas and oil generation. It looks like small-scale solar for shops and homes may finally become cost efficient soon.

Nah...nothing's going to change...earthquakes are shoganai, so the nuke plants will stay exactly as they are.

The problem is the nuke plants that are damaged. TEPCO doesn't have a lot of extra capacity AFAIK and it takes years to build new nuke plants.

Nope, BB is in Hyogo AFAIK.

I think AO has family up north somewhere though? Hope everyone is okay.

My family is in Hachinohe too. I haven't been able to get in touch with them yet, but I have a friend in Tokyo who was able to get through.
Thanks for asking.

If there is an opportunity to go to Japan and help with clean-up efforts, I am there.

The imagery from Minamisanriku is just staggering... pretty much the only things that tell you there used to be a village there are the hospital and what remains of the rail line...

I've been thinking about how I might be able to help out too. I'm sure translators for the foreign aid workers will be in short supply...

For those of you affected in Japan, hang in there. I have many friends in the Tokyo, Yokohama, and Tsukuba areas and have heard from a few of them. The images of northern Japan look bad, and seeing entire towns wiped out by the tsunami reminds me of hurricane Ike here in the Houston area just a couple of years ago. Entire coastal communities wiped out from the storm surge. The good news is that northern Japan, just like coastal Texas, will rebuild. It will take some time, but they'll get back. And I can certainly sympathize with the power outages, disruptions to daily life, etc for you in the less affected areas.

My wife and I are looking forward to our next trip to Japan to do our part to stimulate the local economy. And along with AO, if there's a call for help from abroad, I certainly wouldn't mind an early, working vacation to lend a hand.

Sidenote... I'm watching 3 live feed in flash continuously since yesterday. Had to give up on firefox that crash every other hour... Safari on windows 7 have been rock solid...

Sort of... disapointing...

Sidenote 2

The Beeb specialist is openly calling the japanese governement 'liars' aboot the current situation in nuclear powerplants accusing them of covering the extend of the situation and putting population at risk in order to avoid panic and keep control (!?) of the situation... that's quite ballsy...

help

Postby Jack » Sun Mar 13, 2011 3:37 am

I was just telling my wife today that I wish I was there to be able to help or do something. We are scheduled to arrive in Tokyo in a couple of weeks.

I would imagine that foreign workers would not be as welcome given the crippled infrastructure. They could cause problems for shelters and food. Americans can help by having the crew rest on navy ships.

In any event, I have a question, has anyone seen oin the Internet or heard what the comments from China and Korea were? Japan was pretty quick to send help to China a few years ago.

South Korea pledged help right from the beginning. I think they are in the process of sending search and rescue crews.
Haven't heard anything from China but that doesn't mean they haven't offered.
