How not to propose

Crane crashes into house as Dutch proposal goes wrong

Image

The man in the Dutch town of IJsselstein, just outside Utrecht, thought that he had it all worked out perfectly.

He would astonish his girlfriend with a proposal so romantic, so spectacular, that she couldn’t help but accept his hand in marriage.

And his plan worked - but not quite as he had anticipated.

The unnamed Dutchman hired a crane to winch him up to the level of her bedroom, play a song outside her window, and ask her to marry him.

But unfortunately the crane wasn’t secured - and ended up toppling over, smashing a hole in the neighbour’s house.

When they attempted to right the stricken crane, it fell again - creating an even larger hole. The neighbours’ house has been declared unsafe, and two buildings on either side of it have been evacuated.

But the woman said yes - and on Saturday the engaged pair abandoned their devastated street to celebrate with a holiday in Paris.

It is hard to deny the creativity of this plan.

And BTW, in Japan this couple would not have been allowed to leave for Paris...

Wrong. The guy was the load. You don't know how heavy he was. Over a long lever, that can add up substantially...

But yeah, the rear stabilizer could not be fully extended due to that parked car.

Him and some sort of platform presumably. The boom itself is also pretty heavy no? So, they thought that because there was minimal load they didn't need the stabiliser fully extended but in fact the weight of the boom plus a little was sufficient, with leverage, to reach tipping point with the stabiliser foot acting as the pivot.

They rented the thing.

Apparently there were no licenses involved, or a licensed guy didn't deserve his license.

Must be the latter surely. Who would rent a piece of equipment like that, on a self drive basis, to someone without a licence? If it is for a one off job, don't cranes come with a driver/operator anyway?

Don't know... The license are usually needed for driving special vehicle on public roads, or in a company to operate them professionally. For private use i'm not sure of a license requirement. Komatsu have a crane rental office in the big T and i don't remember them asking anything more than the proper license related to the size of the chassis carrying the equipment... (Checked their web site only back then)
