Sound Problem on PC

Postby emperor » Mon Feb 06, 2006 11:52 pm

Just before the weekend, out of the blue, got a problem with no sound coming from the computer, when I log in I do get the win xp startup jingle - but mp3, video etc wont play. (so obviously the soundcard and speakers work)

Ive reinstalled the sound drivers from the motherboard disc, but it had no effect. & Ive gone into control panel/sound settings and eevrything appears to be normal.

Any ideas?

May sound silly but check that the sound or mute button on any of your players is not turned off or down

thx - Ill check those things in the morning

if it is a conflicting codec - it seems bizarre cause no new codecs or software was installed for ages

if it still isnt solved in a few days time, ill just backup everything on that windoze+program drive and reinstall the OS ... im getting used to it at this stage

Conflicts among Window Media Player, REAL Player, and Quicktime are very common when one of them has an auto-update. This sound problem happened to me where only ONE player would play sound and the other ones become soundless but show video. I never managed to get the sound on my Windows XP to work again once this happened to me two years ago. I threw money at the problem and upgraded to Windows XP Pro.

On my G5 iMac conflicts among Quicktime, Window Media Player, and REAL Player will kill my sound from time to time. Just for reference for other FGs with Macs, the fix is as follows:

-----for Mac OS X----

Open the Audio MIDI Setup (Utilities folder) and change the audio output format to 44100Hz. Relaunch the QuickTime/WindowsMedia/REAL Player and test the file again.
