Unpowered apartment

Postby dimwit » Mon Apr 16, 2007 12:41 pm

OK. I got a problem and am wondering if there is a solution technical or otherwise that anyone can think off. Essentially, I have maxed out all of house circuits to the point that I can't use the electric drier and toaster at the same time without tripping a circuit.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Some options:

1. Move to a First World country.
2. Don't use the electric drier and toaster at the same time.

1. Stop growing pot.
2. See if you can somehow use your neighbors' electrics to do that.

Yes, you can have a larger electric service installed into your house.

You probably have a standard 60amp service. It's not enough for a house with a lot of electronic gear -- I had them put a 100amp service into my place when I built it. The construction company thought I was nuts but I insisted and it got done.

I don't know what it will cost you to get it installed, or even really who to talk to. You can call the electric company and ask though, they can certainly give you some idea of price and who to call to get the work done.

You really should get this done too. If you are tripping the breakers all the time you have a potential fire hazard, especially if the wiring in the house is older. When they put the bigger service in have them split off the big appliances onto separate circuits. Certainly your dryer should have its own! The kitchen plugs should not be sharing a breaker with plugs in other rooms, that sort of thing...

If you're renting you're probably fucked unfortunately. Even in an apartment building you might be fucked as they may not be able to run a bigger cable up to your electric box. If this is the case...give up the dryer I guess!

I actually have a similar problem in my office and am going to have to get a bigger service installed. I can't run both aircons at once, and I can't run the aircons and the compressor at the same time. I think I busted the compressor yesterday though so that might not be a problem anymore! ;)

If you are in Japan, upgrading the power circuit is free.
The only thing you have to watch is, while you can up as much as you want if the wiring will support it, if you find it is too much for your needs you can only go back down in increments. Also, I think the basic monthly charge increases with the increase.

Are you using the dryer and toaster on the same circuit? If you move one of them it should take the burden off that circuit.
