Cooks in Japan?

Postby yellowlightman » Tue May 20, 2003 8:33 pm

You guys must get tired of all the "Can I find work as a ______ in Japan?" questions, but I figured I'd add one more to the mix.

Can anyone wager a guess as to how difficult it might be to find a job as a chef/cook in a decent restaurant in Japan? I have about a years experience working in a very respectable French/International restaurant, so I'm not talking fast food or Denny's-esque type places. :)

Definately not considering it as a long time job, but more of a way to get back over there for a period longer than a tourist visa.

Thanks in advance!

Is that only "about a years experience" without a cooking school or restaurant managemnt degree ???

OFFICIALLY speaking, a special skills visa needs a lot of experience and/or a degree.

See:
http://www.hiraganatimes.com/hp/visa/visaqa21-e.htm

Skilled labor visa
http://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/appendix1.html#9
"1. A person with at least 10 years' experience in foreign cooking or special food preparation originating abroad (including the period of time spent studying at educational institutions in a foreign country while majoring in the skills concerned) who is to engage in a job requiring such skills."

Also, why not just call or visit the the Consular Section of the Embassy or Consulate General of Japan nearest you for more info?
