Japan slips in global university rankings, overtaken by China
Mainichi -- September 16, 2010
LONDON (Kyodo) --
Japan has slipped in an annual table of world university rankings and been overtaken by China for the first time, according to survey results released Thursday.
The number of Japanese institutions among the world's top 200 universities has fallen from 11 to five, the Times Higher Education magazine rankings showed.
The British magazine teamed up with Thomson Reuters to assess universities largely based on their teaching and research capacity.

And overtaken by Canada as well - with 9 universities in the top 200.
It was good to see my hometown uni make the list too. University of Victoria in top 200
Not bad for a country with 1/4 the population of Japan, and 1/10 of the USA.

Not to take anything away from Canada, a truly awesome country, but they are spending a nearly proportionate amount of their GDP on education as the US. The countries that impress me are Germany and the UK, who only spend a third as much of their total GDP.

And as much as it pleases me to see the Japanese educational system (which I despise) humbled by a developing nation, I think these ranking systems are rubbish. Case in point: I, a semi-literate retard, was accepted into a top 25 university on that list. :shake:

While the overall trend is probably correct, I have to wonder about the use of subjective measures.

Probably a more objective measure, at least for the sciences.
Never criticize anyone until you've walked several kilometres in their shoes.
Because

1. You're now several kilometres away; and

2. You've got their shoes.
