Yeah, them riots last month reminded me of the constant threat of violence in the UK. Until then, I'd almost forgotten about that aspect of the UK and was starting to think it was all thatched cottages, afternoon tea, ... stuff that any Japanese blog about life in the UK is full of. Total misrepresentation of reality, which is more like walking terrified down the middle of the street at night with your door key sticking out of your clenched fist in case you get jumped 'for a laugh'.

I have some friends from the UK and they say that some of the Japanese that go there think it is safe until they start seeing some football (soccer) riots and guys kicking the shit out of each other in broad day light.
that is one big reason why i like japan... i dont have to worry about getting jacked, held at gun point, or having the police give you a lil beat down for being out at night (which is not a good idea in the first place)...

I have been in fights in the richest parts of the US. Yes even greenwich ct, probably the richest town in the states. Cross the wrong line in the states and you either get shot at or end up in a fight, it don't matter where.

Is the US more dangerouns than Japan on average? Yes. However, it isn't that bad unless you live in the middle of the ghetto (I have) and even the dangers there are exaggerated by most people.
A lot of Americans and Brits like to believe they lived in the middle of warzone back home. It makes them feel tougher.

You made the real estate agents work for you (i.e. they showed you around to a bunch of houses, one of which you eventually bought), then you attempted to bypass them without paying them for their services?
How is that not ripping them off?

That said, most normal people can easily avoid trouble whereas others seem to have a love affair with it (this is being said by someone who was once a troublemaker).
So no, I don't think that a considerable number of sane people in the U.S. have to worry about being car jacked, held at gunpoint, or given a beatdown by the police. I can think of many other places where that is a daily reality regardless of how much you make. As for individual fights, that's something else...
