Ah - don't beat yourself up.
That is one of those classic gaijin moments that are a right of passage.. kinda like wearing the toilet slippers down to breakfast.

They are compulsory!!

japanprobe.com/2012/09/28/m1chael-q-t0dd-living-and-working-in-japan-without-a-work-visa-a-victim-of-passport-theft/

JapanProbe dug up some more dirt about the latest claim that by M1chaelqt0dd that he now says he's a, "victim of passport theft."

However neverending M1chaelqt0dd's saga is, JapanProbe did provide a bunch of fun links listed by M1chaelqt0dd, Esq. --"recovering Kiwi lawyer, Twitter strategist, author & love promoter in Tokyo" -- at xeeme.com.

Japan Probe are right to question the visa status of this guy - it all sounds really fishy aka the CJ thing.

However, I do object about the personal smearing based on his family situation - how many ex-wives and children he has in how many countries has nothing to do with his visa status.

Also, trying to say that the police are cracking down as they thought he was a part of the sea shepherd group is also murky. This is just like CJ trying to say that he was being persecuted for writing articles critical of the govt. Immigration (or the police for that matter) care little for that crap if they are focused on your visa status then just talk about your visa status.

Saving dolphins or praying at temples has very little bearing on the stamp in your passport.

Working for money when you are on a tourist visa is a problem but your legal hobbies (eg saving whales, praying at temples) are of little consequence in the eyes of immigration.

Yeah, but it makes for a much tastier trainwreck for the general public who was first led to believe that the guy was a modern day... whatever you can think of... (I can't brain today, I have the dumb...)

I love it! A lawyer doing a bit of pro bono to help the hairy legged getting arrested for visa violations.
Only a fucking lawyer could then go out and beg gullible punters online for donations.
I hope they lose his passport and the cunt gets stuck here for life, embroiled in the morass that is the Japanese judicial system.

LOL, I can count the number of times I've been to Roppongi on two hands, and the number of times I've been clubbing there on one. Maybe I'm doin' something wrong though, I'm not a twitter expert

But a lot to do with his now very public mid life crisis.

And I'm not so sure it isn't a consideration for the immigration office.

This is all moot until he states the actual visa he was on before he passport was stolen. If he was on a short stay visa, then the ARC is from an older and expired visa. You are not eligible for an ARC if on a short term visa. You are supposed to surrender your ARC when you depart and this visa is finished.

Still stinks like dead fish.

I thought it was possible - just not required - to apply for an ARC if on a short term visa. I remember it was one of the steps I had to take when converting my short term visa to a working visa, can't recall if I did that before applying for the visa. But the story still sounds dodgy.

More info claims here: Background

THE VISA
Michael is in Japan on a tourist visa. Michael speaks Japanese and has two Japanese children from former marriage living in Japan. Michael lives with his fiancee, Yoriko.

Chalk this one up to another long term entitled FG living off the fat of the land thinking that the rules don't apply. Alternatively not fully understanding and then crying foul when they are ultimately shown the errors in their understanding.

Tourist (sic) visa requires to carry your passport.

With his "lost" passport and claims that he had a ticket out of Japan and an ARC, I am just extrapolating the following:

He had a spouse/work visa at some point that meant he had an ARC. This visa expired or became invalid (divorce?). He left Japan keeping (wrongly) his ARC and returned on a short term stay visa. How many of these he has had is not known. He was currently on a short term stay visa that was due to expire at the end of September. He had a ticket out of Japan before this expired. Claiming that he was engaged and living with a J-national, it can be safely assumed that he planned to return at some point.

The lost/stolen passport just makes things all a bit murky as it immediately hides how many entries in an out of Japan (visa runs) he has had. But these things can be checked which is probably what they are doing.

We have all tried to play the system to our own advantage at some point but I only object to these guys with their hyper-inflated sense of entitlement when they are clearly in the wrong. Now of course, everybody else is a hater for pointing out where this guy and others have fucked up.

Pretty much sums it up I think.

Interesting comment from "Eido INOUE" on the JapanProbe page:

Any Japanese/non-Japanese can see their own record of entrances/exits to Japan that the computers have recorded by requesting it via paperwork at their local bureau for ¥300.

Not sure why you'd need to do that, but it's interesting you can.

The guy's lawyer background is showing, he is muddying the issue with carefully chosen information

From the link above

I showed him my Foreign Registration Card (older version AND still being used during multi-year cross over time till July 2015). I was told it was out of date and that I needed a Zairyu card.

Which is blurring his expired gaijin card with the current changeover, so a cursory reading might come away thinking his gaijin card was still valid, he never admits it expired, just the cops said it was. The gaijin card changeover has nothing to do with his story, but it helps confuse people who aren't resident in Japan.

If his passport was stolen I'm sure they'd have given a piece of paper to carry around stating as such when he reported it stolen.

You don't - I assume he has it from an older visa like a spouse or a work visa that expired or became invalid (divorce). But he kept the card but was just coming in and out on tourist visas.

Technically you can (could)... the stamps in my passport show I got mine on a tourist visa, before it was converted to a working visa (albeit after I'd applied for the working visa).
