OK, I had a free moment and found this site: http://www.tapatalk.com/ , but all it does is offer an Android app for download, which is a bit useless as I'm not even accessing the site from an Android device.

Any other clues?

The Tapatalk plug-in for phpBB has to be installed on the forum server before people can use it.

Aha, why didn't someone mention that earlier? Unfortunately I'm not au fait with every app which is out there, and their website top page is still serving up the Android app ad which takes me to Google Play but fails to give any other hint to the uninitiated as to what it is.

I'll take a look when I have a moment...

Sure there's a chance, I will see what I can do, as they say...

What I would also like to do is set up an additional control panel option "Use mobile theme if mobile device detected", which will automatically switch the theme for mobile devices (but not force the mobile theme on people who don't want it, esp. tablet users).

But srsly, the renumeration for running FG is somewhat minimal (aka zilch), I'm open to requests but the more info they come with the better the chances I can do something about them...

That would be even better, as I generally don't log in with mobile, but just browse. Cheers

Highly recommend you guys d/l the tapatalk app. It makes browsing/posting on most forums sooo much easier on smartphones. (and easily filters most recently active topics, topics you've posted in, etc)

Mine wasn't crashing, but I was getting endlessly repeated "helpful hint" popups on how to use its features there for a while. Seems to have cleared up now though.
