Prepaid SIM

Postby gaijinpunch » Fri May 17, 2013 11:02 am

From my understanding, in typical Japanese form, this cuntry has really fucked this up making it painfully expensive (and almost impossible) for visitors.

I have a colleague cumming from HK w/ an unlocked (of course!) phone. Last I checked, you had to have a visa/gaijin card to get a prepaid sim card. Is that still the case? I've found info on the internets very lacking. The idea is to avoid those 10 year old phones they rent out at Narita.

Fuck...you just made me realize that 10 years ago is 2003! (And this year is almost half over, too....)

Last SIM I bought was bmobile and required none of that. I wouldn't even bother with voice, just a reasonable data plan and use LINE.

I am here for a short time and I got a very cheap phone from Softbank using my passport and a landing permission stamp. As long as you charge it with a 3000 yen card every six months, you can keep your number. Incoming calls are free. I have people at my firm call me all the time using the cell phone instead of my IP phone on my computer in the apartment when I am not in the office. I travel to Japan frequently, so I plan to have the phone number and the phone indefinitely.
