"FCC approves SoftBank's acquisition of Sprint"

The $21.6bn acquisition of (the US mobile phone company) Sprint by Japan's SoftBank is now a go: as expected from rumors earlier this week, the FCC (a US regulatory entity) has ruled unanimously to approve it.

"Today is a good day for all Americans who use mobile broadband services," acting FCC chairwoman Mignon Clyburn said in a statement accompanying the lengthy ruling. "After thorough review, the Commission has found that the proposed Softbank-Sprint-Clearwire transactions would serve the public interest."

Clyburn expressed her opinion that the merger would be "likely" to speed mobile broadband roll-out, enhance competition and innovation, and drive consumer prices down. "In addition," she said, "the order finds that the indirect foreign ownership of Sprint complies with Section 310 of the Communications Act."

Thanks to the FCC's approval, Sprint can also move forward with its $3.7bn acquisition of the remaining shares in Clearwire, an acquisition that will help SoftBrint (SpriBank?) compete against AT&T and Verizon due to the much needed spectrum that the deal will bring with it.

Is the mobile communications market in the USA so bad that Softbank is seen as a good thing!?

Marketing blabber from a regulatory body...

The best quote was in the linked article:
SoftBank chairman and CEO Masayoshi Son, often overstated in his commentary (your Reg reporter once sat through a presentation in which he outlined his company's 200-year plan), was restrained in his remarks

in a word, yes.

4 major carriers charging over 100 bucks a month for unlimited talk, text and data, 5gb download caps and honestly shitty coverage and data speeds. Device carrier lock in (us devices are not carrier-neutral even if they do use SIM cards). Massive below the line fees and surcharges that add 20% or more of the advertised monthly fee to your bill each month....its fucking ridiculous over here.

Even shitty disruption in the market is good disruption at this point.

What's he going to say?

"We've approved this acquisition because there's no legal basis to stop it. However, honestly speaking, SoftBank is a shit company run by nutjob and this is sure to end in disaster for everyone."

It's terrible - extremely high prices for extremely bad service, with lots of nickel and dime-ing along the way.

I bet the exec's at sprint are laughing all the way to the vomitorium. The worst carrier in US is about to go south. lol.
Well, it is neck and neck between Sprint and ATT for the poor service/scam service categories.

Aint FCC a state run entity ? Making her a glorified civil servant...
Don't they have clause forbidding disinformation or lies to the public ? Because it's wishfull thinking corporate bullshit straight out of the Enron book of deception...

Saying this acquisition will serve public interest is the same as stating gay marriage will destroy the family...

But with the first one only lead by greed... It's even more unlikely...
