Advice as good as what you paid for it

Free consultation event to be held in Shinagawa, Tokyo
Japan Times | Oct 3, 2013
Shinagawa-ku International Friendship Association (SIFA) will hold free professional consultations for foreigners residing in Japan on Oct. 26.
Professionals in various fields -- including lawyers, notaries, certified social insurance labor consultants, psychiatrists and clinical psychotherapists -- will provide consultations covering legal issues, for example on visa status, as well as marital-, health- and work-related matters....
...
The consultation service will be held from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on the 7th floor of the Curian (Kyurian) Event Hall in Higashioi, Shinagawa Ward, which is a one-minute walk from the JR or Tokyu Oimachi stations. Foreigners who reside outside Shinagawa Ward are also invited.

Is this the reason why Japanese seem to think neurosis means simply to go crazy?

We have previously discussed this, including how a German language-based term which has had a varied interpretation over time medically, means one thing in English language popular culture and another thing in Japanese language popular culture. Basically, in the Japanese context, read the word as "stress based anxiety" and you wont be too far wrong.

I scratch my head at advice no. 10.

Don't eat your own excrement or drink your own urine in the presence of others.

Apparently that was a problem in the Japanese army at the time. But then again, if no others were around, it was considered OK.

I think you are misreading that Russell. If you are in the presence of others, it is only acceptable to eat the excrement and drink the urine of others. Share yours, and receive the generous gifts of others, to show that you are a participant in society. Those who refuse, and keep their treasures for their own consumption, have no empathy, and are most certainly sociopaths.

More seriously, I have no idea where that fascinating document came from. It may have been telling your own troops a way to fake a mental illness so that you got transferred to a different facility if you were a prisoner of war. After all, the British gave advice as to how to fake tuberculosis. Hint ... smegma: it is more useful than you think!

Holy shit, that's gross (and I am used to something, having a great-great-great-grandmother from Germany).

It reminds me of the advice I heard as a youngster to stay out of Dutch military service: put peanuts butter in your underpants in advance, and finger it out during the interview to have a feast. If you're afraid that that doesn't work, you can in addition sleep with an onion under your arm pit the night before: makes you sick as hell.

I got out of army service by telling them I didn't want to waste more than a year smoking weed, getting drunk, watching soccer, and talking about chicks each day. That was apparently so shocking in the Dutch context, that they let me go. LOL
