Facebook is broken

Postby yanpa » Fri Jan 31, 2014 9:02 pm

Every few days I get a plaintive missive from Zuckerberg asking if I know a bunch of names I vaguely recall from past decades but probably wouldn't recognize the owner if we passed on the street... but recently I think their algorithm has jumped the shark and is coming up with names which sound like they've been pulled out of a random generator.

No, I do not know "Silvana SecretBatgirl".

Sorry, but could someone explain to me what Facebook is?!?

It's sort of a book of faces, but online. More something for the older generation, the hip youngsters are all into swapping Vines on Line or something, so I hear.

Meanwhiled, from Inked-in (the social network for tattooed people), it seems I share a mutual connection with a "Seasoned digital contents and online advertising professional", whatever that is.

Wasn't there a theory that everyone is related to everything by three degrees of separation or some such? So you might as well know anyone, which saves Fecebook the cost and hassle of cranking their database for you.

The feature can be tunred off, in case you were not aware..

Yes, but no matter how much or little I use it, I don't care for a hundred e-mails a day telleing me about the exciting and wonderful things that happen, while I am not there and whose acquaintance's acquaintance I have yet to befriend :)

Yikes, that reminds me - this year will be my 20th year of e-mail in Japan (I worked at a software company/ISP in '94, and yes, getting an e-mail was a pretty rare occurrence).
