'Will be allowed to stay in the country indefinitely' HUH?

Postby Taro Toporific » Thu Jun 12, 2014 8:13 am

If this means war-dog, journalism school grads we're doomed...

Law to enable foreigners with advanced skills to stay indefinitely
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Lawmakers on Wednesday passed the revised immigration law that enables foreign nationals with advanced skills to stay indefinitely in Japan as well as simplifies passport control procedures for foreign tourists.
The government is hoping an influx of people with special skills will help invigorate the economy. Specialists envisaged under the revised law are researchers and engineers in information technology, medicine and other fields as well as corporate managers and university professors.
Foreign nationals may qualify to stay in the country under a new status for specialists if their academic credentials, professional background, annual income and other factors meet the law's criteria and if they remain active in the area of their specialty in Japan for three years. Thereafter, they will be allowed to stay in the country indefinitely.

I'm still checking but I think this is little more than fast track application for permanent residency.

I think this sounds like the promised rework of the highly-skilled professional visa that was 5 years to PR. The one that allowed you to bring your servants with you? The one that all the English teachers seemed to miss the reading the "highly-skilled professional" part and moaned that they didn't qualify. And then virtually no one applied for it.

I think it is more along the lines of:

1) "we would really like to keep out gates locked tight"

2) "but we are slowly coming to realise that keeping the gates locked tight will lead to further stagnation"

3) "so we will open the gates just a little tiny crack, enough that we don't scare the locals too much"

Although the truth of the matter is that few of the people they are looking to attract will think that this change makes Japan any more attractive.

Exactly this. The ease/difficulty of immigration or even getting permanent residency is surely not putting anyone with actually skills putting off. I can't think of any useful professionals that have had trouble with visas. The system appears to be a lot easier in Japan than elsewhere and certainly a lot faster and cheaper.

Boy the brainiacs who thought up this plan are going all out with the perks. Stay in Japan indefinitely? Wow! Well, fuck the pay, Iza comin'. Isn't this the incentive that is needed to attract low-level workers--which they definitely need? I guess the idea of the unwashed staying indefinitely is a non-starter.

I think they can fill the unwashed quotas easily with their locally farmed idiots... Now getting them to perform basic tasks will be a bit more difficult since they are all still high on their 'japanese superior race' bullshit...

Well, they certainly succeeded to attract you to this cuntry, Coligny...

On a different note, is there a limit on the number of servants I can bring from abroad?!?

What about skilled people from poorer countries? I agree it won't work as planned but may have a tiny effect.

Well, at least skilled people from poorer countries may bring along lots of in-house servants. I recall some scandals with that, though, of Indian people exploiting who interpreted "servant" as "slave".

I thought that was the speciality of Saudi Arabians.

They are rich, but not smart, neither educated.

At least the Indians have learned to work for something; the Saudis have always gotten their riches for free.
