I renewed my California DL online even when in the states.....haven't been to the DMV since 2006. Fucking Japanese 3-year renewal is a scam but I'm sure it's one of the few legit excuses sarareeeemen get to take a day (or morning) off from work.

I think in WA it's OK to continually renew online if you live in state but if you're out of state they want you to show up in person every other time. I'm not sure what the logic is though.

At least in Tokyo you can renew your license on Sundays so I don't know how good of an excuse that is for the black-suited drones.

Sunday at the DMV...the suicide rate in Tokyo suddenly becomes a little clearer.

The mandatory safety video would take the same amount of time no matter what day you went. All the other stuff only took me about 30 mins or so last time.

Another reason why I just wont even bother with a DL in this cuntry. I have dramatizing experiences at the DMV....

So I go in line 1 to get my ticket to line 2... so I wait for my name to be called... Señor IPU... Señor IPU.... ventana número 2. Then I start my eye rolling... get to the window and fucking dude starts laughing at me. does a cough/laugh and says I askeded for Señor IPU. I say that I am and I don't speak Spanish (middle and last name is pretty beaner like).... have to wait another 30 minutes to get an English speaker and it is usually some white chick or guy. I prefer a sista cause they give more of a fuck then the white workers do usually. Fuck the DMV.

I have had a better experience with the sistas than the whities that worked at DMV.... not saying that you are wrong, just from my experiance.

I have found a lot of the darker skinned land whales know their jobs better and do it faster but the attitude and language would be grounds for dismissal in the first world. Is there a bit of a Fuck Whitey thing there? They talk to me like I'm 12 years old. And if you giggle or gasp they can go absolutely ballistic. What gets me is how miserable they all seem. You have a job, you fat cunt......smile. Still, it's a bit like being in a 70s Black Power sitcom, so as an Invisible Foreigner it's kinda fun.

By far the best are the older obvious ex-military type white guys. A lot of them are actually people. Either that or the haggard looking diner waitresses.

The chances that a fat government worker, regardless of "race," is going to be a selfish/entitled/asshole are probably like 99.99999%.....so if you get one, you play their game and smile...cuz the only thing that comes out of fighting them is some enjoyment (on their end) for bringing you down to their level.

Of course every jurisdiction does it differently, and even this very jurisdiction did it differently 10 years ago, but I just went through all the hoops to get a record of my photo ID and sample signature for my drivers licence on file. The new part of the procedure this time was "to get a photo record on file before receiving a renewal notice, you will have to pretend to have lost your license and pay for a replacement for your current license, paying the 'idiot tax' on those who lose their license. The only other alternative is to receive a 'photo and ID verification pack' which will have a list of those qualified as notaries to witness your signature and verify your photo in whereever you are," and I just know that that procedure will cost more than the idiot tax in fees and transport, if it is indeed possible at all.

Maybe the Canadian trend to try to stop people having multiple drivers licenses is also in my future, but it will make life that bit more difficult. A government issued document with my name, my photo and an address is very difficult to operate without, for example when opening a bank account.

I think you have confoozled me. You need proof that the photo and signature on your DL are yours? Isn't that what the DL itself proves? These supplement to supplemental proof rules are startingto make my brain hurt.

Yes you need proof that the new photo and signature that are going in the record as your identity, is you, when you are not standing there in their offices in front of them. I know that all your actions are pure and angelic, but I think you can see how if the system was abused and I sent a photo and signature sample (actually of somebody else) from a foreign place and that photo and signature was then recorded as being linked to my name, then the drivers licence ID starts to have less veracity as an ID.

There were similar issues when I tried to make a postal vote. Good luck me finding a doctor, lawyer, teacher, public servant etc., who was of a Commonwealth of Nations nationality (God save the Queen!), and who had known me for five years, to be witness to my signature on the outside of the voting envelope. I can imagine similar headaches with this photo and ID verification pack.

What pissed me off is that they used to be happy to take a record of your photo any time, without you having to pay the licence reissuing fee. Maybe they only did that when they were transitioning from my previous "valid without photo" endorsed licence.
