So not only is he a pretentious pleb but also a prima donna. I always wondered about the mental capabilities of fans that extolled his supposedly bountiful natural intelligence, but the news that he's really just a very naughty boy has overshadowed my contempt for his middling class intellect.

Ian Hislop was on Question Time this morning and the topic came up. Apparently Hislop was assaulted by Clarkson during the filming of Have I Got News for You. Clarkson threw a biro at his face hitting him just under the eye. And drew blood. They had to stop filming for repairs. Clarkson accused Hislop of lying saying it wasn't blood at all but red ink from the biro. But he did apologise later after filming was complete.

He also asked what was going on when the PM, David Cameron, who is too busy to debate the current state of affairs found time to issue a statement on the matter. Quite right.

It's highly amusing watching the likes of Hang em and Flog em Littlejohn desperately trying to avoid talking about what he did and what the consequences should be and instead saying it is all cos he is white, male and far too British and it's in some very weird, convoluted way Political Correctness Gone Mad. Sure ....I can just imagine the Daily Mail giving Russell Brand or Jo Brand or someone like that a free pass for similiar behaviour.

I've been listening to an international podcast by two British dudes lately and one of them has lived abroad while the other is "hardcore Brit." It's hilarious to hear the well traveled dude keep correcting the other on these types of words but even more on his pronunciation. (keeps coming up because listeners are complaining they can't understand him or don't understand what he's on about) Last episode he pronounced fillet "fill-it" and tortilla "torty-Lah" and when called out on it, started ranting about how "it's the ENGLISH language, not the AMERICAN language."

I once got a lecture from an Englishman about how "gotten" was improper American English and one of his pet peeves of which I'm sure he had many. I looked it up and it turns out it's an old past participle form that has mostly fallen out of use in England but is preserved in America.

Seems like that's quite often the case. I still crack up with Brits or Aussies say "I reckon～～" though...may not be improper but I tend to associate it with people that also say "Y'all" and "Yeeehaw!!"

Yeah, reckon has a different or at least non-Billy Bob connotation in Cdn as well, but I can't really explain the difference with 'I think....'. I reckon if I had thought about more I could have gotten it, but F it.

As for that Jeremy Clarkson style linguistic chauvinism I just take it for what it is: the sadsack rantings of an impotent mediocrity too stupid to embrace it and enjoy it. Perhaps his raging social impotence is what appeals most to his hard core fan base? As a professional Canadian I can say that we have turned muddling mediocrity into a national strength, and we're moderately happy about it. Excpet for Olympic hockey, of course.

I also know lots of normal, good people that are quite entertained by Clarkson, but they seem to laugh at him more than with him. He's like that one crazy uncle that just won't learn to not be a dick. He's also barely older than me; maybe he can use his upcoming break and marital breakdown to get himself together; he looks 10 years older than he is, and at least that older than me.

1 overpaid Canadian wins a foot race against another overpaid Canadian to administer the coup de grace in what looked like half of a blowout victory anyways. On a side note, the overpaid Canadian coach of the winning team failed to smile (again).

I don't like the way Sutter has shut down the front of the net with the clogging and shot blocking but it sure worked for a couple. Weird how much they're stinking this year.

Actually, Kopitar (making the pass) is from Slovenia and Gaborik (footrace winner) is from Slovakia. Have to give both of them props for making it though...I've seen clips of both being asked "who was your favorite NHL player growing up?" and they were like, "We never got the NHL in Slovenia/Slovakia"

They're picking it up. The last two cups were also seasons where they barely made the playoffs as well. Once they're in, it's just beat down after beat down. The average weight, size difference they have over most other teams seems unstoppable when they're on their game (playing really physical) and it really fun to watch.

yup, a fine example of how language changes in some places and doesn't in others.

I speak a dialect of English which preserves a lot of old forms, but it is considered non standard, I had buddies at school who used "thee" "thy" and "thou".

I'd say it's a bit early to judge. They still own the format and rights - And I am not convinced that is dependent on any particular team of presenters. In fact it could be argued that the show needs a refresh. There are lots of contenders - after all that particular brand of talent is not especially rare. Or they could do as the did with HIGNFY and have a different lead presenter each week, and possibly keep Hammond and May. Or whatever.

In any case, how much the show was or should be worth matters less to the BBC than it does to Sky and their ilk. It's mission is not to maximise profit but "To enrich people's lives with programmes and services that inform, educate and entertain." And that matters.
