It's just one that I actually dated, in particular, that was otherwise pretty amazing. (the rest were either friends of friends or teammates wives) She didn't do it initially either...false advertising? I could ignore it for the most part (don't look) but instead of the usual lip smacking when eating, while she held her mouth closed, I could hear teeth on teeth chomping as she chewed. Never had that one before...you'd think it hurt or would grind down her teeth? ....it's like fingernails on a chalkboard for me.

i always do slppy eating like a dog both at restaurant and at home.

Definitely depends on the place, usually you can have some fun with the hard-headed idiots by making them hold your luggage....go to the restroom, then come out and say you need to take something out/put something in your luggage. When the checkout time is 11 or 12 firm...I've never understood their boner for knowing exactly what time you will arrive or trying to hold you to it. As has already been said, it comes across as "for THEIR convenience" rather than great customer service. (even then, unless it's a small mom and pop place, it doesn't seem like it will be of much benefit for them)

Toyoko Inn charges 1080 Yen for every hour you check out later than 10:00 AM.

I would tend to agree - so was trying to surmise cases where that might not hold true, from the perspective of the hotel. I came up with two... Of course these are still not omotenashi from the perspective of the guest.

Where the hotel was concerned with `fairness` - and having to say `no` to an early arriver, making them wait - and possibly have them see another party get a different room early, even though they were still waiting for theirs.

And...

Where some rooms on the same floor were ready, and others not ready - with the hotel/cleaning staff wanting exclusive hallway use as they wrap up their duties.

Those are both good reasons, and the first one certainly plays to a concern for broader customer sentiment, especially given how powerful an obsession Fairness and Equal Treatment can be with so many Japanese (unless they are on the plus side of the equation, strangely enough ). Look how hinky lots of men get over preferential treatment and marketing campaigns for women.

I also buy the second one; that seems a perfectly legitimate need on the business' part. I would also add 1 1/2 more: simply because Those are The Rules, and That is The Way It's Done. Japanese customers' appraisals of Japanese service seem to rise or fall based on the flowery lip service alone, and their criticisms of customer oriented North American style service echo that concern. You could fix a problem, build them a custom hotel suite from scratch, or accommodate almost any idiotic request imaginable but if you don't start with Irrashaimase and end it with Makoto ni blah blah blah they simply won't be impressed.
