Happy Hanukkah Bus!

Postby Taro Toporific » Sun Dec 06, 2015 9:07 pm

Tonight is the first night of Hanukkah and Tokyo surprises me with a Hanukkah bus.
The last thing I expect to see when I was stuck in traffic this evening was a menorah to celebrate the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah plastered on the back of a Tokyo bus.

Ok, ok, I know that the Hanukkah menorah
drawings above are not a proper menorah since
they do not have one taller candle, the shamash, but still...

I saw it several times as decoration in the BigT central station.
I think it's because Judaism was invented by Japan but dirty jewish fureigners came to steal the religion and claim it as their own. Same shit as with hokkaido Jeebus... At first they also wanted to take the island and pretend it was their promised land but between the quakes, typhoons, the weather that sucked way too muche and the lack of Palestinian to punch they kinda gave up.

The "Gap" between the recent increase in Christmas themed everything, illumination, and lack of an actual Christmas observance (even for non-religious, just observing tradition...romantic holiday it is not) is still beyond comprehension but this is the land of jumbled together kaigai, known as "Japanese-style."

You do have to look very carefully to be sure that it is a Hanukkah menorah and not a kinara.

I wonder what the reaction would be if Zainichi here created a holiday...

Can it be assumed then that they only hire Jewish teachers?

And how will they check?

Will they examine said teachers' states of circumcision?

I thought it was standard to use some kind of shibboleth.

I was going to point out that circumcision is a wider practice than your comment suggests, especially in the Middle East, but I got bogged down in slightly fanatical sites listing Islamic hadith, whereupon I came upon this gem:
Circumcision, throughout history, has been thought to provide a measure of protection against infections of the foreskin.

Yes, well the complete removal of that body part would pretty effectively "provide a measure of protection" against any infection.

i heard circumcision in babdyhood also means to cut skins which is a room for growing the length of the stuff.
this is why korean who got circumcision in babyhood have 9cm ones, regardless of the fact they are relatively taller than japanese.
is that true?

Hmm, yep, I was a bit trolling, and kind of imagining that the average Japanese wouldn't know that it is not only Jews who are circumcised.

That gem you uncovered is in fact an often heard argument, to which I always reply that it is better to cut off as many body parts as possible.

Surprisingly few people are aware that circumcision has a wider cultural spread. Just like few people are aware that Kwanzaa uses a candelabra.

Of course, with nine candles, what we are really seeing is advance promotion of St Lucy's Day, 13 December.
In relation to that, pay particular note:
Historically Norwegians considered what they called Lussinatten the longest night of the year and no work was to be done. From that night until Christmas, spirits, gnomes and trolls roamed the earth.

It's also still standard in the US regardless of religion though rates are falling.

LOL, this reminds me of a drunk/passionate speech my friend made, suggesting penii size is an evolutionary adaptation to the increasing/decreasing booty size of the females in the population...

In an attempt to steer the conversation away from massive ass tumors...

Screw Hanukkah! It's Pearl Harbor Day. Which should be celebrated by reminding every Japanese person you see about that great uncle who was aboard the Arizona.

:keyboardcoffee:

The tinfoil hat responses I've gotten from various Japanese about Pearl Harbor are amazing but I can do without another reminder of We Japanese™ victim culture.
