I am not too into dramas and stuff but the first two that come to mind are Densha Otoko and Hanazakari no Kimitachi e (Hana Kimi).

I really dig Densha Otoko minus the main char being a bitch 99% of the time, but besides that the music and everything was pretty cool... The same applies for Hana Kimi's character "Sano".

Is there anything else out there like these two that are more current?

Just realised yesterday while taking an appointment with me Julie to talk aboot dinur, interompting some random schoolgirl based lame as shit jtvshow,those where the acting manage to be over the top and cardboard standup based at the same time... quite a feat...
When you see how pathetic are regular tv series or movies... you understand MUCH BETTER why their pr0n lameness is second only to their nukular powerplant safety management practice...

I think the last drama series I was into was Trick, with Hiroshi Abe and Yukie Nakama, and that was over ten years ago.

The main reason I stopped watching dramas was probably because I started a job that I usually don't get home from before 11pm, but even now with a DVR I just don't give a crap about them.

'course, the same goes for US series. Tried a few of them, like Lost, Prison Break and Rome, but never got beyond the first season before losing interest.

So, he asks knowingly, has anybody seen any Japanese drama series or movies lately that they would recommend to a fellow adult. I just watched Konna Koi no Hanashi (1996) which made me cry, laugh, puke and remember how gorgeous Nanako Matsushima was in her 20s, and how cool Hiroyuki Sanada is. I also just watched The 35 Year Old High School Student (2013), which made me laugh and cry until the last episode....after that it was mostly puke.

Any recommendations?

But it seems to be very Otaku/Weebo oriented judging by the fare on offer. Lots of that dramatised geek fare anime and manga BS.

Last drama I remember getting into is Nemureru Mori, with interesting characterisations and creepy atmosphere, and a plot with some meat to it. And also the important factor that it didn't scream out to me "I'm watching a Japanese drama, with stilted, unnatural dialogue." But I see that it was last century, which comes as a bit of a shock to me. It had a cute tie in with the plot climaxing on Christmas Eve, and the last episode broadcast on Christmas Eve.

Not a deep movie by any means but an enjoyable romp and a reminder of what skiing was like back in the bubble, you can't go past 私をスキーに連れてって. Lots of corny stuff to criticise about the movie, but that is part of the charm.

the reason i dont like j-drama is the big divergence between the actual j-behavioral pattern and in-dorama one.
ordinary j-ppl never shout "行くなああああ！(dont go!!!)" and collapse to their knees in the hard rain in daily life. they even dont say "愛してる(i love you.)". when i rewatch the doramas i watched in my childhood in youtube etc, i cant resist itching all over my body. i said sayonara to doramas when i was a high school boy. but this shall not apply to detective doramas (my favorite was 刑事貴族 series and re-air of 探偵物語 by yusaku matsuda )and currently i even dont have TV.

Later, I enjoyed Yamada Yoji's Samurai Trilogy.
