The true tragedy in all of this, other than a loveably laughable funkalicious garden gnome dead before his time, is the alarming hagiography and the touchiness of people when I bring up the unexpected blessing of finally being able to properly refer to him as The Artist Formerly Known as Prince. The rise of this new slavishly reverent emospastication at the death of even minor pop stars like this is a frightening development. I liked his music often enough, but his true legacy, surely, was his comically earnest attention to self-absorbed masturbatory iconclasty rather than a truly huge collection of largely forgettable music?
