I'm sure the imperial family gets doctors trained outside of Japan so maybe he has a chance of making it. That does makes me wonder how the name of a particular Emperor's reign is chosen though. Does anyone know?

I asked my inlaws about this and they weren't so sure.

I asked about who will take over when he dies... and they say that he has 3 sons that will take over sequentially until the last one dies.

Then I asked what happens after that cause there is no male in the next generation to take up the throne...

Mom said that they are thinking about giving it to one of the girls but does not seem like it would work cause it would break the Japanese tradition.

This led me back to the first question about what is after Heisei... she said more tax money to Tohoku.

#2 son (Akishino) had a son (Hisahito) in 2006. Problem shelved for at least another 60-odd years.
I have a blog. Last update: April 7, 2013.

So, if the doctor screws up are we looking at seppuku?

Seriously, if you look at how they came up with the name 'Heisei' I really doubt that the Emperor dream it up himself. According to Wikipedia:

[quote]On 7 January 1989, at 7:55 am, the grand steward of Japan's Imperial Household Agency, Shō]

Interestingly enough, I noticed that a lot of calenders are not using 'Heisei 24' perhaps speculating that he might not make it though the year.

As far as open heart surgery goes a bypass is pretty routine. Out of ICU in a few days, home in a week usually.
