Looks like the New York Times has discovered nobody's going sign up for their new service where you pay extra money for their selected articles. At least not as long as they continue to staff the paper with dictation takers for "senior administration officials" instead of reporters... Anyway, they've decided to offer a two week free trial of their TimesSelect service (usually US$ 9.00 monthly)

The interesting thing is that this includes a 100-article monthly allowance for searching NYT archives (which has always cost money). It also includes its news alert service. So if there's old dirt you want to dig up, go sign up to get your 100 free articles.

One official said that while he could not prove that the tractor-trailer labs had actually produced germ warfare agents, they had been designed and configured to do so.

''If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it has got to be a duck,'' the administration official said.

Pay for news?
Sure I'll pay for my news when somebody starts paying for the news I write, hee, hee.

In the meantime, I use the no-registration-required backdoors to New York Times.

I'll pay if you open a PayPal account for it! Heck, I donate to this crappy web site (and I mean that in the most loving and respectful way, Ultra), so of course I'll support a good, useful cause like The Taro Times.

Yeah, but those don't work for TimesSelect stories like today's White Sox article. Anyway, not to knock the backdoors - they're awesome. I was just pointing out that this 14-day trial gives access to the full NYT archives for free, for up to 100 articles.
