What else should be in the kit?

--Solar/kinetic radio with LED flashlight built in. I have a couple of the older models. NHK and AFN will be giving instructions on relief stations and distribution of suplies.

--Crowbar for escape, rescue, and to liberate goods (and self-defense against Gov Blinky's friends).

--Tarp.

--Antibiotics

--Water purification tablets (or couple drops of plain old bleach)

*Water (four liters/one gallon per person per day.Change water every three to five months)
*Food (canned or pre-cooked, requiring no heat or water.Consider special dietary needs, infants, the elderly, pets)
*Flashlight with spare batteries and bulbs
*Radio (battery operated with spare batteries)
* Large plastic trash bags (for trash, waste, water protection, ground cloth, temporary blanket)
*Hand soap and/or disinfecting hand cleaner gel that does not require water
*Feminine hygiene supplies, infant supplies, toilet paper
*Essential medications as required; glasses if you normally wear contacts
*Paper plates, cups, plastic utensils, cooking foil and plastic wrap (wrapped around plates so that they were re-usable) and paper towels
*First Aid kit with instructions
*Yen in small bills (ATMs may not work after a disaster), with coins and phone cards for public phones.

Not that the US embassy is the final word on anything, but it is a bit easier to read than the TMG's bi-lingual handbook...although I think the "disaster message exchange" (pg 36) is a really clever idea

I might opt for a small pry bar rather than a hammer. And while you don't want to pack too much stuff, I'd might put in a hat, work gloves and a pocket knife as well...and if I was confident about I would be using the same model cell phone for a while, some disposable batteries/one those AA battery adapter chargers for it, although it's hard to predict how the phone networks will do in a time of crisis

My wife pointed out a yellow backpack hanging on the back of a chair at her sister's place the other day, telling me it was an earthquake survival kit. I'm thinking that I should assemble one sometime. On TV, they had a tarp-like bag that unwraps into a loose stretcher that two people can use to carry another person which I think would be perfect for putting the kit into (though possibly into a bag inside the bag in case you ever had to use it).

I need to revive my high-school sense of practicality - my friends and I used to always have bags full of useful kit, such as leatherman tools, knives, torches, batteries, lighters and you-name-it.

Good suggestions – thanks guys. I’ll definitely get one of those kinetic torch/radio things. (Chu-hi and a pump action shotty - isn’t that more of a zombie outbreak kit?) Another thing I thought of was a set of those kafunsho paper masks because, if it happens to be dry, their might be a lot of smoke/concrete dust/ or even asbestos

As a matter of fact, a crowbar, flashlight, and semi-automatic are the top three items in zombie survival list

The rest only comes after you survive long enough to need them..
