For the first time in quite a while I saw a Japanese film last week. It was "Semishigure" based on the novel by Shuhei Fujisawa. It takes place in Tohoku region during the Edo period and is a story about the love and friendship of a young samurai. Starring Somegoro Ichikawa and Yoshino Kimura, this film depicts the modest mentality of the Japanese people often forgotten in today's fast-paced society. I was so drawn into the story that I lost all sense of time. I was also enthralled by the breathtaking sceneries of all four seasons of the Shonai region in Yamagata Prefecture where the film was shot, as well as by the beautiful music which added further depth to the film. I would also like to give credit to the performance of the child actors who played the younger versions of the two main characters.

The leading actress Yoshino Kimura has served as the first Goodwill Ambassador to Promote Tourism. Ms. Kimura is also serving as the Goodwill Ambassador to Promote the Japan-ROK Joint Exchange Year this year, which marks the 40th anniversary of the normalization of relations between Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK), and as such has been designated as the "Japan-Korea Friendship Year 2005." Ms. Kimura admirably played her role of a Japanese woman with elegance and purity, both of heart and deed. I am sure that this is a film that would be popular amongst the Korean people and elsewhere in the world.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Postby ichigo partygirl » Sun Nov 20, 2005 12:33 am

Just saw the new Harry Potter film. Pretty damn good. Quite scary, not for under 12s i would say. The acting has improved alot from the main characters and i was really happy with the new characters. There are a few bloody fun lines that had the gaijins in the theatre laughing out loud and the Japanese wondering what was funny. Sometimes humour just doesn transend cultures and translation.

All in all a very good movie - i would give it a 4/5

Went to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory last night. Was pretty good! Johnny Depp did a good job with Willy Wonka, came across as crazy and eccentric as would be expected. The kids were good too, just like I remember from reading the book many years ago.

Saw it at 109Cinemas in the Mino Osaka Carrefour complex. Was the last show, starting at 21:15 or so. We were the only people in the entire place when it started, although one other couple came in about 10 minutes into the movie. Had perfect seats and was able to enjoy the show without any interruptions. Highly recommended if anyone out there in FGland lives close enough to get there. (Also only 1000yen/ticket for shows starting after 8pm.)

Batman begins

Postby canman » Tue Nov 22, 2005 12:44 pm

What a weird movie. And Ken Watanabe was just strange. I was disappointed I thought he would have a larger role, but as usual he go to play the token Asian, mumbling some incomprehensible language. It also seems strange to try and resurrect the Batman series considering it was just demolished in the 90's. They should have waited a little longer.
