Since I've had to fly in/out of Japan alot the last few months, I can't help but notice (remorse) about the state of the FG's servicing the US and Euro airlines. Alas, another trip is coming up and it's a damn 18hr on an American airline! Arrrghhhh! I can see it now,---- FAW's roaming the aisles, 40+ yr obasan 'attendants' -- shit food and clapped out seats from the 80kg+ regular occupants. At times like this, I really, really, love JAL and ANA especially! Why the hell do US carriers put their 'tired, homely, weak and ugly' as preferred attendants on trans-pacific , and trans-atlantic flights??? And , god forbid, WHY do they allow them to wear cheap ass perfumes and colognes purchased last minute at K-Mart and 7-11 ???

Let alone the schlock they call 'food' and the overflowing waste buckets they call 'toilets'. This alone is enough to keep any FG LOST and happily slurpping shochu at the nearest Izakaya.

Do they have free booze and personal (in-seat) IFE on that flight? If they don't, there's your answer.

If bad food, mummified F/A's and obnoxious passengers really bother you I'd suggest you fork out the extra cash to fly business class and/or with an premium Asian carrier such as SIA/SQ or CPA/CX. It sounds like it's really worth the extra expense in your case. I'll also let you into a little secret: All carriers always put the best-looking F/A's in business and first. Economy is not so bad if you're with a Middle-Eastern or Asian airline, but American airlines with their unionised "I'll keep flying until I hit 57" F/A's must really be hell.

My airline of choice is UAE/EK (Emirates), but not an option for you as they don't go transpacific.

i fly business class on non-asian airlines across the pacific and ive never experienced the things you describe. so i guess the solution is obvious. you get what you pay for. what was the point of the post? to make me feel sorry for you?

The airline industry isn't what it used to be, not since 9/11. My sister worked at AA for like 15 years and she got out of the business because everyone hates it now. The customers are always cranky after dealing with the TSA, and they all take it out on the airline people. So I can fully understand why the employees are all dispirited.

I'm not sure what DrP's point was. But I'll chime in that when I fly business class on non-asian airlines, I certainly do experience much of what DrP did. I'm not sure what's older and more beat up: the flight attendants or the rickety old seats. I've had no problems with the meals though. No doubt the asian airlines are offering a lot more value in business class, though.

Not all of us can afford to fly business class everytime we leave the country.

The reason U.S. carriers are typically filled with old hag-bitches and gay men (who, don't get me wrong, are a million times better than the old hags) is probably because of all the EEOC litigation that has been brought against them for hiring only pretty young things back in the day. That's just my guess.

Maybe if you flew coach on AA or United and then on a carrier like JAL you would understand the reason for this post. :dunno:
