How to prevent mosquitoe bites?

Postby momotobananaoishii » Wed Jun 27, 2007 6:16 pm

ok I'm no stranger to mosquitoes being from one of the best places on earth for nature but I'd like to know what you guys use in your houses here for mosquitoes?

Are you using those purple lights? Candles? Do they sell 100% natural bug repellent here?

I'm thinking of buying 5 purple lights and 5 candles just for my bedroom. :nihonjin:

skunk urine seems to do the trick for me.. but for some reason people shy away from me in public places... so if you love privacy and isolation, and loathe mosquitoes then I recommend fresh skunk urine.

I don't know if you can prevent mosquito bites but you could always augment them with a wonder bra.

Don't have that luxury yet as just moved into this apartment downtown and we haven't bought AC.

Besides I exercise outside a lot so I also need some sort of repellent.

For indoors do those round electric devices with the hole on top I see on TV actually work?

I remember Dan Quayle recommending a folk remedy that involved rubbing your entire skin surface with a raw potatoe.

Sure. The various kinds of Katorisenko will work...and it's responsible for significant amount of the cancer in older Japanese. :fresse:

Ummmm are you talking about just the electric ones or the smoke coils like these too?

Because I thought the smoke ones contain Pyrethrum, a kind of chrysanthemum?

DEET is considered the most effective repellent against mosquitos (and other bugs). I've used it and found it very effective.

ummm but don't you know about DEET?

I just found this article on ultrasonic repellent. The article is about teens using the tone as a secret ring tone in class because the older teachers supposedly can't hear it. I will play the mp3 in the article on my MacBook while I sleep. :shroom: The weird thing is I can hear the tone quite easily. I'm pretty sure you guys will be able to hear it.

Here are a pile more tones at ultrasonic-ringtones.com.

It's cool because ultrasonic-ringtones.com says:
Find out just how far your ears can hear into the range of ultrasonic ringtones. Pretty much everyone should be able to hear the lowest tone (8kHz). Many people should be able to hear up to around 14.1kHz, from around 17kHz upwards we get into the range that only the under 20's can hear!
I can hear 19kHz I think. Definitely 17.

Apparently it's BS but I'm trying it tonight anyway. I hope I can sleep because the 17kHz tone sort of penetrates my brain lol

The electric and smoke ones both use synthetic pyrethroids are strongly suspected as being carcinogenic---Long-term or chronic exposure to pyrethrum causes liver damage. The old-fashioned nature chrysanthemum smoke coils haven't produced in 80 years.

Farts and BO work for me. But why would anyone care? I mean the number and ferocity of J-mosquitos is laughable if you have ever been to Northern Ontario.

I'll bet they're not as bad as the mosquitos in Hokkaido. I remember one evening, I went with some friends out to a park, I was wearing short pants and my legs got bitten up by mosquitos, the bugs were so intense that I left almost immediately. The next day I went to school (wearing shorts again), I walked in the door and suddenly everyone said "oh MY GOD what happened to your LEGS?!?" I hadn't noticed it yet, they were massively swollen and covered in huge red marks. I guess the walk to school caused the inflammation to get worse. I took an antihistamine and the swelling went down, which was a good thing because I would have gone to the hospital, it was that bad.
That evening, I mentioned to the operator of the geshuku that mosquitos were causing me trouble. She freaked out, "what? You're bothered by mosquitos IN YOUR ROOM?!?!?" I had to explain, no, not in my room, out in the park. She was relieved. I asked her what to do and she said to buy "mushi yokei spray" at a pharmacy. So I did. It had DEET in it. Hooray.

Whoa, you had me going there for a minute.
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.
