A former gaijin who's trying to explain the benefits of a train system that actually works has hit a wall talking to the New York Metro people. Conceptually, they just can't comprehend how such a system could even exist. Talk about aristotle's cave....
this is a long shot but...
For all the amatuer photographers out there:
I need photographs of Tokyo Metro stations. Here's what I need:
Photos of:
Ticket gates
Entrances - try to pick the beautiful ones, like Oedo Roppongi (like that escalator shaft with the cool twisted orange steel tubes)
Platforms - Again, nice ones like Oedo line
Trains
Picture of general ticket area showing that there are subway maps at every ticket machine, so that people can easily find their way
Picture of platform sign that tells when the next trains are coming
Picture of people waiting at designated spot where the train doors will open
Train interiors - try to take a picture of a train inside where the seats fold up (so standing only)
Any examples of "art" or human aesthetics that you think make a train station a more pleasant space to be in - this can be anything from the cool interior designs on the Oedo line to the way the subway entrance in roppongi is built in to roppongi hills (or whatever building it is)
I think you can get all of these pictures from the Roppongi stations and 1 or 2 others like Shimbashi or Shinagawa.
My boss wants photos to emphasize how great, beautiful, and efficient the tokyo metro system works compared to our shitty ass MTA subway in new york (it's really not that hard). This doesn't have to Ansel Adam's type stuff; just get the point across.
But hey, have at. be creative; use a tripod and some long exposures of trains moving or evening shots. use wide angles. whatever. open to who ever goes for it. and please post your stuff here.
if i use them to show to my boss, you will be given credit for your work; but sorry no cash. since the job is purely conceptual, i don't even have an expense account.
if you REALLY want to make an impression, get a 30 second video showing the main gates at shinjuku during the evening rush hour showing how you can move 1000 people a minute through the ticket gate.
