Any recommended nomehodai in Tokyo area?

Postby Basashi » Wed May 28, 2003 6:42 pm

Hi guys!
I might be coming on back to Japan for a few weeks this summer and I'll be bringing some of my friends from the States. I've told them about the wonderful thing called nomehodai and they're quite excited to give it a shot. Unfortunately, I'm only experienced in the Kumamoto area and since my friends will only be with me while we're in Tokyo, I must call upon you seasoned Tokyo gaijin for any recommendations! I know that nomehodai beer is usually lower tier stuff, but my friends are not very discriminating in their choice of suds. Just give me a nice bottle of shochu and I'm fiiiiiiine. And don't worry, I'll make sure they behave themselves. Anyways, your input is greatly appreciated!

"If a respected foreigner in this country wished to gain the extra good opinion of his native friends, he could do no better than become their willing guest... and get as drunk as a lord so he had to be shoved into his car... It would elevate his credit in their eyes as nothing else could. It would show his implicit confidence in and his appreciation of their friendly attitude toward him."

Wellllll, not quite the response I was hoping for... But if it's a matter of drinking quoteables I'll give my two cents on the issue of getting trashed...

"An intelligent man is sometimes forced to be drunk to spend time with fools."
-- Ernest Hemmingway

"Work is the curse of the drinking class."
-- Oscar Wilde

"Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."
-- Benjamin Franklin

"He was a wise man who invented beer."
-- Plato

"The problem with the world is that everyone is a few drinks behind."
-- Humphrey Bogart

"When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading."
-- Henny Youngman

"Abstainer: a weak person who yields to the temptation of denying himself a pleasure."
-- Ambrose Bierce

"To alcohol... The cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems."
-- Homer Simpson

and my personal favorite...

"Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, 'It is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than to be selfish and worry about my liver.'"
-- Jack Handey

Now please don't get the impression I'm in Japan only for the liquor. It's a beautiful country with a rich and fascinating culture. However, it's just a fortunate happenstance that alcohol figures prominently into said culture.

Oh... and if anyone has any recommendations I'd still be happy to hear them!

Cheers! :)
