I went a couple times years ago and it was a lot of fun.. Most of the locals that witnessed it seemed to really have a good time. I remember an old couple surprised when the train pulled in, but then smiled ear to ear and jumped in. The old man was immediately given a beer and started chanting/singing along with everyone.. But I don't know how the party is these days; it could be ugly and more obnoxious..

Those 2channel guys sound like a bunch of wanking losers.. Oh, and since when have Japanese ever 'done as the Romans do' when roaming? I don't know any other race that brings their own 'superior' rice with them when they travel.. And when I was in college, the Japanese students were some of the most obnoxious on campus when drunk..

Did you join the CH.2 attack (again, safe behind your Akihabara monitor) or did you join the attack on the Yamanote, trying (again hopelessly) to get a gaijin female to talk to you?

Thanks, Mulboyne, for a good precis of the whole highly-amusing affair. I took a look at the Japan Probe blog entry, and found what I think is the E-J-blogosphere quote of the month:

"If any of you are wondering, Akismet spam protection can automatically detect and flag ASCII text art of male genitalia as spam."

Got one! The witch had just traded in her black cat for a black goat!
BTW, I think we should feel sorry for the 2ch group, because they suffer so horribly
because we FGs play this Halloween game in an attempt to insult all Japanese....

This Japanese report of the event appeared on Tanteifile and sparked a further 2000+ comment exchange on 2ch.

The biggest question for most 2chers seems to be why choose a train carriage to have a party? Others wonder why no TV networks seemed to have picked up the story up given that police and railway officials are well aware of this event in Tokyo and Osaka. There's a slight sense of unfairness with some speculating that if they held a sudden party on the train and advertised the fact on the net then the police would not be so lenient. That leads more than a few commenters to observe that angry 2chers come across as jealous about other people having a good time. Japan Probe seems to be almost universally blamed for helping to promote the event.

That's kind of the Japanese id isn't it. One cannot have a good time unless someone else instigates it. The idea of have fun by one's self, or an impromtu party does not penetrate their realm of comprehension.

When the Big One (earthquake) hits, based on the largely passive-aggressive display of outrage shown by Japanese 2-ch'rs, I don't think we gaijin have anything to worry about as far as a repeat of the 'wildly successful' "kill da gooks!!" campaign waged immediately after the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake.

I'm not so sure about that. Blinky recommended closely watching and controlling us FGs in his speech to the Self Defense Force a couple of years back. Ya never know!

It is always admirable to see the 2-channelers taking time off from watching kiddie porn to be outraged.

I usually let my wife do the trawling. She is far more skilled at finding the fun stuff. The few times I have bothered going in there myself I haven't really found much rhyme or reason in the way in is 'organized'.

Tangentially related:

BBC: Tube revels shut Liverpool Street
Liverpool Street Tube station has been shut after thousands began partying there to mark the last night of drinking on the Tube. Drinking alcohol has been banned on much of London transport from midnight. Thousands marked the ban by gathering to drink around the Tube network. Liverpool Street was closed to ease overcrowding, after about 2,000 people began partying there. Across London, six people were arrested for being drunk and disorderly. The ban on drinking from - or carrying - open containers of alcohol applies to the Tube, London buses, Docklands Light Railway and trams...

...Many people celebrating the last night of legitimate drinking met at Liverpool Street Station's west-bound Circle Line platform at about 2030 BST. Others crowded onto Circle Line trains, while police said Baker Street was another hotspot. Londoner Matt Wynn, 43, a banker, said: "I've come along with a bottle of champagne because I want to show that you can drink responsibly on the Tube and not cause trouble. "It's going to be a bit of a stop-start evening, though, because there are no toilets on the Tube." Steve Nosworthy, 27, from Australia, said: "I've brought along this big crate of Carling and I'm going to go round and round all night - well, until 12 o'clock, when I'll probably get kicked off." David Mudkips, 25, a web programmer from Hackney, described the experience on the train as: "Like rush hour but fun. There were people's sweaty armpits in my face but I didn't care because I was drinking." Peter Moore, 35, a sailor from Brighton, described his night as: "Drunken, I just downed a can of beer in 10 seconds. It's sweaty on there but I'm going round and round until I vomit"...more...
