Losing the stomach for sushi and sashimi

Postby Samurai_Jerk » Mon Apr 13, 2009 12:29 pm

It's weird. I've always loved sashimi and sushi but I've found that for the last year or so I seem to be slowly losing the stomach for it. Especially sashimi which used to be one of my favorite foods. Suddenly eating raw seafood has started to gross me out a little. I've never gotten sick, eatern anything that tasted spoiled, or had any other traumatic experience I can think of that would have caused this, so I have no idea where it's coming from. It's a shame because I just don't enjoy going to the sushi-ya all that much anymore.

It's not just raw stuff either. I seem to be losing my taste for some of the "stranger" things like squid and octopus too. Again, that stuff never used to bother me at all and I was always one of the adventurous gaijin who'd eat pretty much anything.

Has this happened to anyone else?

I had some bad, like gone off, kaiten sushi once in Japan. I spat it out and didn't eat any sushi for a while. Everything else at this restaurant was okay except for this one, actually there were two pieces on the plate but I didn't try the second one.

I complained, left, and didn't get sick.

Sounds like age creeping up on you there SJ.
Pretty soon you'll only be able to stomach oatmeal.

On the other hand maybe it's just a phase, like you just ate too much of the stuff and need a break.

I find that as I age, I get a lot more situational in my preferences. Sushi and sashimi fine, but as a stand-alone snack or meal with beer or nihonshu. Before, I'd eat them as appetizers to multi-course meals, mixing buffet style. Now, I like to have only one regional food or type of food at a sitting.

Can't be an age thing :frown2:
Can't be the raw stuff, either.

I still enjoy lunch downtown,anyway. :drool5:
Though I must admit, I usually forgo the 69 "breakfast of champions" of late.

I don't think it's an age thing because it's not like my stomach can't handle it (spicey food on the other hand ... ). It just doesn't seem like something appealing to eat anymore. I have no problem with cooked stuff like unagi or even things that are just slightly seared as is sometimes done with toro or salmon.

for me it was soba. when i first went to japan i couldn't get enough of it, but about 2 years in, i couldn't even watch other people eat it.

with sushi and sashimi, i'm always up for it, but my taste in variety seems to change a lot...ie, sometimes i want one of everything that's on offer and other times i'll stick to the boring ebi, crab, and toro or maguro.

and then there's stuff like sea urchin, that fish sperm that looks like a brain, and cow stomach. i've tried them all, but the thought of trying them again, well... :puke:
