UN-F*cked Gaijin?

Postby GargoyleTS » Thu Sep 04, 2003 7:39 pm

This letter at Dave's Esl Cafe seems to have some really awesome advice for anyone trying to get to Japan via the Eikiawa Express. Read it and it really made me stop and think for a minute. It pretty much sums up everything everyone here has said about coming to Japan in one short sentence (you'll know it when you read it).

Or maybe its just 5:42 am and I need to go to bed...

Interesting read. Sounds like NOVA can really shove it in your ass when they want to.. but he suggesting to you to just grin and bear it, and then come back the next day for another dose.

I don't know about that. His sentence, "That's not what I'm here for, man", might work for part-time ESL teachers, but what about long term FG residents? If you know your career in Japan (and the food you put on the table) depends on getting good evaluations and maintaining good relations with your co-workers, then reciting a line like that isn't going to help much.

In other words, it's a possible remedy for people whose purpose for being in Japan is to take a long vacation.

RANT MODE...ENGAGED!

I'm not liking the 'teach english to get a vacation in japan' attitude, and I think that's exactly why so many of these spoiled brats create websites, cartoons, books, and blogs that never end about how much eikaiwa sucks. I've had some of the shittiest jobs one can imagine, and most of the time I had no problem because I didn't have my priorities, thus my attitude, screwed up. Eikaiwa is not supposed to be some easy cake walk that allows you to vacation in japan, it's a fucking job. A shit job in some cases, but a job never the less. So acting like someone owes you something because you decided to grace them with your presence in japan will always lead to a bad experience, and bad feelings. Some of those teachers have absolutely solid reasons to complain and have been screwed by bad schools/managers, but the vast majority, in my opinion, are just mad that they have to do drudgery work while in japan instead of just being able to party all day and night. Sh-t, go back to your home country and try holding a job with that attitude. "That's not what I'm here for..." inherently tells you that the person doesn't get it and probably won't be happy until they are blissfully unemployed in japan (i.e. fucked/leech) or back in their home country. "What" ARE you here (in Japan) for? Women? Parties? Laying on your ass with little work to do? WHY are you in Japan? If you just want a free ride with a light-work pseudo job like you've heard some 'lucky' eikaiwa teachers have then I think you deserve whatever you get. Truly royally fucked gaijins in the making. Fucking cry baby. Man the fuck up.

Fuck yeah if I can get away with it! I ain't here to make money for a bunch of corporate cunts. Actaully, now I'm past that party stage but my premarraige days were all out fucking full on about fun. I hate when I meet a newbie and he's a total corporate kiss ass and all serious about teaching English. My advice is have fun, fuck your students (literally of course) drink all night come to work hung over do as little as possible and start all over. So that guy in the letter, he's saying he's not here to get bogged down in the negative hassles of work. I doubt he was all about chicks and booze either. More power to him. Don't let the bastards get you down. That's a great way to live.

Big: He is saying what everyone says. You work for the majors, you get shafted. It happens everywhere and is pandemic among those recruited for these positions cause it tends to be these kids first taste of a Corporation. And just about every site that bashes/reveals the truth about these school advises using them to get to japan and when you become unhappy, find another place to work. Just roll with the punches until you have that new job...

Kamome: It is for newbies. It really is. You know no one really knows if they want to live somewhere until they've been there. And if you plan to make someplace your home, then you need a career that isn't gonna dump you cause "you don't sound american enough" after you've been there for several years.

Jim K: I agree. Some of those people get royally bent over. But "schools" recruit anyone with a pulse, decent basic grammar skills, and a BA or BS in ANYTHING. And since they like young, fresh faces, most of their recruits are right out of college with NO real-world workplace experience. SO yeah, they have a notion that its supposed to be party time and get all worked up when that notion gets hit with a clue-bat. My point in posting this was that he refused to let someone manipulate him into hating Japan. Just throwing everything out the window with a flippant remark would be stupid. He did his job (according to him) and had a decent personal life. He decided not to let his boss interfere with that. Have you had a boss who just didn't like you, but you had to keep the job for esome reason? It sucks, and "i gotta eat" or "i gotta pay rent" will only make you work hard enough not to get fired.

Ass: That's what I thought too. (about not letting bastards and all that)
